[Music] foreign [Music] you ready yes what is it what episode of this one 30. 30. this is 30. a big 3-0 can i remember this no we don't have time thanks clay we have so much fun doing this i mean we do we've been probably one of the highlight of my year
00:50
so far this year it's been we've been doing this since um i think it was march uh when we started this it's been a long time this is number 30. number 30. um and it's been really great i think it's great for us to dig in and these discussions about you know issues and culture issues in church just just biblical topics that we could really have just the the ability to sit down talk through dive into dissect right for people um i'm here instead of adam today
01:20
and uh there's this well yeah people people see this yeah and it looks so much like adam yet it's a bobble head of spurgeon and yet it looks so much like adam and adam is on vacation with his family that probably he shouldn't be here yeah okay all right see you later adam yeah all right there we go um now we can can go forward yeah that's good well this is our uh our third week summarizing some of the topics on our 40
01:53
days of seeking god of repentance and prayer and i've really needed this the elders got together and we decided we needed to do this we did it eight years ago we did it four years ago because these uh elections have been so contentious that we just needed a vehicle a tool to kind of keep our heads straight yeah and we need to back out from looking at it so many times we see the election or everything that's
02:23
going around in the media um or or you know online and say you know basically woe is me if this happens or this is great if this happens this is going to be you know the salvation here and we need to step back and remember that our battle is not with flesh and blood right but it's with you know principalities powers rulers and so how do we do that we battle through prayer is one of our main tools so i think it's really great that y'all have been
02:54
dealing with this 40 days of prayer leading up it's kind of getting us in the right perspective yeah i've been so grateful some of our elders have been helping to write the devotions and it's just been it's been key for me it's it's a i just have a real deep uh emotional response when people um you know they say things that they shouldn't say they begin to put their trust in things uh that they put and shouldn't put the
03:26
trust in and so not only did i need this because the election because of coven but as a pastor of a church i just want to help other people you know to stay focused and don't don't get involved in all this stuff last week uh adam and i talked about uh certain sins that we needed to confess part of this is confessing our sins and we we looked at covert sins
03:57
i mean sins of commission and these are sins that uh we on purposely do that we know that we should not do the bible tells us that we should not do them and we went over things like how do we repent over lust and immorality things of that nature because we live in such a sensual world um when we don't pay attention to this body as christians because this is the temple of the holy spirit
04:28
or we can't serve two masters that we the sin of idolatry of money and possessions and things of that nature we had a few humorous things to say about gambling but it's really people who are addicted to gambling it's not a very humorous it is a serious thing but it's about hard work yeah you know and then the last thing was standing for the truth and when we don't stand for the truth that is uh really uh it's it's the center against what he's told us to do we are supposed to be salt and light
05:00
yeah so uh today we're going to be looking some important areas of sins of omission in other words things that uh that we've been told in the scriptures that we should do it's a natural part of our relationship with christ and then we struggle doing those things yeah this is i think speaks really a lot to me because it's easy to say well don't do this and you're like okay um you know a lot of that you know we can live our lives not doing things a lot of times
05:32
and we fail and that's why we talked about you know confessing those i think when it comes to that things of things we the way a christian's life should be lived that's where it gets sticky i mean that's where you start to get i get convicted when i look at those things i was like man am i loving my neighbor as i love myself am i exactly all these uh you know that you know that god's called me to do that seems small but there are these these commands that as a christian my regard to my neighbor my regard to
06:03
you know my uh you know brother and sister in christ you should be without anger you know and so on so forth so when people go through our discovery class they are surprised that in our covenant we don't have do's and don'ts right uh we and i tell them i said look most of us know what we shouldn't do but in my relationship with god these are some things that i am that i long to do that i pledge to do in my relationship with other christians these are some things that are in the
06:34
scripture that i should do and in my relationship with the world there are some things that i should do so if i don't do those then those are really sins of omission right and that's that's kind of what we're talking about today uh so the first thing is really fundamental and uh i chose abiding in christ not simply because frizzle did in his uh in his book but sometimes we misunderstand this idea of abiding in christ and the binding is important i mean jesus spent
07:04
a whole section there talking about the vine and abiding in that christ and so many times you read them you're like what does that actually look like what does that mean right yeah you're exactly right there have been theologies developed that would say okay a christian can choose to abide in christ or not okay so if i'm a spiritual christian then i'm abiding in christ all of a sudden it's on us here that's right and it's about my decisions uh and if i'm not a spiritual christian then i'm not abiding in christ
07:35
well that is not anywhere like what jesus said right and using the illustration of being in the vine and the branch you know has to do it really has to do with an intimate personal relationship with jesus christ just let me read from the scripture that you alluded to abide in me christ said and i in you as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine neither can
08:08
you unless you abide in me i am the vine you are the branches whoever abides in me and i in him he it is who bears much fruit for apart from me you can do nothing the idea of abiding isn't something that i think i will choose to abide today and that i want tomorrow abiding is remaining or living in uh it's continuing in it is this personal relationship with jesus christ
08:39
and he holds us secure in that it's not a special relationship yeah it's not something extra no that's right i was brought up in the 70s where you could choose to have a special relationship with christ or not um i remember being taught that there's there's there's a per there's a story of jesus when he was healing a blind man and and the blind man said oh i can see people as trees and then jesus touches him again
09:11
and people have used that as a theology jesus can touch you to save you but you still may not see clearly therefore you need a second touch yeah and uh so that kind of gives you mixing up sanctification with salvation and saying you know we're missing that point there of where that you know the difference of that that's right um john tells us in first john whoever keeps his word in him truly the love of god is perfected by this we know that we are in him
09:43
whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked so this idea of abiding is the same as is walking in him it's remaining in him it's continuing in him it's knowing him there's all kinds of scripture that uses these different terms but what happens you know if someone's not abiding in christ well here's here's what we know
10:15
but see if anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away as a branch and dries up and we gather them and cast them into the fire and they are burned if you abide in me and my words abide in you ask whatever you wish and it will be done to you so the idea is abiding is the same thing as knowing christ jesus in his prayer said and this is eternal life that they know you the only true god in jesus christ
10:49
whom you have sent this word no is that intimate personal experience of abiding in christ i think it's cool that many times god talks about our relationship um with him the same way of the marriage covenant that's right and it's not it's not so much these uh you know this religion as a relationship and like you said an intimate relationship requi with christ i think a lot of times we
11:19
we don't stop to think about what that really looks like it means that we can have you know a close relationship um like a husband and wife has with each other and it grows and it grows over the years that's right um as you get to know that person and we're not talking about perfection right not even not in our relationship with our spouses and not in our relationship with with christ jesus it is a growing constantly moving relationship but he still talks about it as
11:49
abiding remaining in him and that definition that this is this is eternal life right to know me right right and it's it's so good for us not to get confused with that because i think a lot of people think okay well if i send then all of a sudden you know i'm you know i'm out of here you know dylan we did such crazy things back in the 70s yeah we we did this thing called spiritual breathing right okay so talk about it it's just awful i mean and we used to do this uh
12:21
we would be on stage we have a hundred kids out there and we'd say okay now let's confess our sins and then we'd all exhale and you could hear the whole group going and then we say okay now let's get filled with the spirit and then we'll go with him you know and so we had this be filled with a spirit carnal be filled with a spirit carnal that was never in the scriptures like that never was so paul tells us examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith test yourselves or do you not realize
12:53
this about yourselves that jesus christ is in you unless indeed you fail to meet the test so this abiding is essential as we move forward with these other topics about if we're walking with him and we're abiding in him there are some things that we may omit thus we may have sins of omission and you take the first one all right uh ignoring the conflicts of conscience
13:23
uh let's unpack that a little bit because i think that's you know uh our conscience god has given it to us that's right to uh with the holy spirit you know working in harmony with the holy spirit and the holy spirit convicts us of sin of uh omission and commission um and then that's where we dive into this here so if we ignore that conflict yep we're in a way [Music] stifling something that god has given us
13:54
to keep us in a intimate relationship that's one reason we have the holy spirit exactly james says so whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it for him it is sin so you use some illustrations about helping your neighbor or feeding the poor and we have other uh here even at first john but if anyone in this uh has the world's goods um and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him
14:26
how does god's love abide in him and so it's by not listening to the holy spirit seeing the need we are sending not only against the holy spirit but we're sending against that person that we should be helping and he's given us a conscience uh to help us through that now mr bryce wrote about this topic a little bit in day 37 here he did and uh you want to kind of unpack that a little
14:58
bit well i mean it's it's just a great devotion so uh if you are going through the devotions that we're sending out each day look at 37 and uh i think that you will really uh see a the spiritual perspective that bryce brings out so that we can be a little bit more sensitive right to the leadership of the holy spirit and if you're not getting the email uh let the church office know uh it because
15:29
it's not too late to get on and that's right with us for the rest of this no that's exactly right even though we're in the last week if you want to get on the mass email we have every one of these devotions listed and you can easily get to them the third thing is neglecting christian witness the father has sent me and i'm sending you we have a charge it
16:02
doesn't get any more simple than that there's not much to say that's right jesus could have stayed in heaven and we'll all be lost or we can stay in our little church and we could hold hands with each other and we can sing and we can praise and we can go to bible studies and let the world go to heck in a head basket it seems easier just to do that i mean it's comfortable here you know it is i mean you agree with me i agree with you we love each other
16:31
i mean i like you right and i like hanging around you um there are some people though that i don't necessarily like to hang around but you know what if i don't share christ with them in a thousand years they're lost yeah you know and uh the scripture even says to some degree and i don't know exactly how this works their blood is on our hands right if we don't at least share we're not responsible for them rejecting christ but we are responsible
17:03
for sharing christ we don't have to understand that we have to obey what god said and that he does the work but he's also called us to have a part in his work by being a witness for him and how that works you know people theologians have argued about this for i am so glad that you you bring up the dichotomy between god's sovereignty and our responsibility right because the same god who says that it's the holy spirit who convicts
17:33
is the same god who says go and tell right so it's not wonderful i'm what he knows that's right that's right so uh the neglect of christian service and romans talks about this in romans 12 it says i appeal to you therefore brothers by the mercies of god to present your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to god which is your spiritual worship now what'd you start to do you had a king james you had memorized it that's right your reasonable service i
18:05
that's the way i memorized it when i was a kid and i remember going to one of these newer translations and it says your spiritual worship i said that's not right right but they're interchangeable here that's worship and service we worship as we serve that's right um and so i you know uh you were talking about before if you see your brother have need and you shut your heart to him first john says how's god's love dwelling in you and that's reasonable service we're called to serve
18:37
as part of our worship put those two things together all right so here we are in worship okay we're we're in the sanctuary right we're singing we're listening to god's word we think we're being spiritual then god reminds us that the day before we saw a need and we refused to meet it so we refuse to serve someone yet we come to worship and yet the scripture says that serving
19:08
someone in the name of christ is worship right we've got we've become so um so compartmentalized this western culture that sunday morning from nine to noon is our worship time and we say okay i'm gonna come worship god next the only time i'm gone and i'm gonna go home that's right and live my life totally different that's right where worship is a 24 7 as we live the christian life well the last topic of sins of omission is denying self and
19:40
embracing the cross this goes back to the very fundamental call of discipleship jesus said anyone who would come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me and if he doesn't do that then he can't be my disciple so i mean we really have to take these things seriously uh dylan that uh this is just not something that we're gonna um come to a point and say oh
20:13
wow maybe i should be following christ you know and uh adam sermon sunday on going outside the gate outside the city why because that's where jesus was crucified that's where the sin offering was taken and burned and so what the author of hebrews in chapter 13 was saying is we're to follow jesus outside the gate we're not supposed to stay in jerusalem we go out to where he was crucified
20:44
and there we begin our ministry and we share christ and we live a crucified life it's painful it's dirty a lot of times it's messy that's right but it's where we're called to be and i you know growing up my parents had us read and listen and learn about missionaries a lot and you see that over and over again where they leave their comfortable houses they're great paying jobs you know they're they're great professions and they go and they get down and dirty
21:15
uh doing and sharing their faith with others that's right and that's what we're called to do you know it's gonna be painful but it's also uh a blessing that and an honor that god has given us to be able to be co-laborers with him in sharing the gospel no that's absolutely true you know these sins of omission sometimes they are things that we're ignorant of but this
21:46
is now let's just go all the way back to the abiding in christ the abiding in christ is also having his words abiding in us in other words as we read scripture and as we pray and as we grow through the years we can't claim ignorance right anymore so sometimes the things that we did early in our christian walk out of ignorance or the things that we didn't do now we know we should do them and so part of the abiding in christ is growing
22:16
in our desire to love god and to want to do the things that he has told us do not just not do the things that we shouldn't do and so um it's it's convicting and it's sometimes harder as you say from the very beginning to identify the sins of omission right so but anyway thanks yeah and i'm i'm grateful for the mercies of god you know and uh that as many times as i fail in these areas that god is merciful um
22:48
and that it doesn't change my status with him that's right um and that he continues to convict me and help me to grow in that relationship so that's right um thank you for these uh these 30 weeks of this has been good we do have one we do have one more announcement yeah we're ending uh our normal round tables this week here uh we will be posting a couple important announcements and then also we will be posting information and uh kind of talking about
23:20
what we're doing with evening in december evening december's coming up in just four weeks here um things are changing a lot people are signing up we have over 400 and i think 70 people signed up in that incredible that's less than two weeks and yeah in less than two weeks and so if you want to come to evening december you need to register this year because of covid and the restrictions with that and trying to social distance and keep everybody you know comfortable and also able to experience
23:51
our evening and how do they register for that you can go to ameliabaptist.org on the front page there's a link to register there um and just be in prayer for this this is a this is a great opportunity for us to share the gospel to our community we have people from over 15 churches involved in this right um so this is just really something god has opened today how many volunteers do we have we have we have 194 volunteers is that not incredible yes god has just so blessed us here to do this and be able to in this time of uncertainty
24:21
still be able to do something that has been a blessing to our community and uh actually grow and expand it this year beyond what we ever could have imagined you know people so many so many churches unfortunately have had to contract what they were going to do for christmas because of covid um we were just blessed that the lord gave us this vision yes to expand and not only should we not be guilty of the sin of omission uh of sharing christ our church
24:52
does not want to be guilty of the sin of omission of not sharing christ and our you know our our listeners and watchers here they have that opportunity to share this with their neighbors share this with their family and bring them to this experience where they get to experience biblical stories come to life here on properties with the opportunity of saying yes to christ yes thanks dale all right patricia thank you so much okay boom done all right
