hey guys it's Carl Brown for guitar lessons 365.com today we will learn how to play the rain song by Zeppelin so this is by far my favorite Jimmy Page acoustic songs and it's in a whacked-out tuning so apologies for this one but we're gonna have to get into this tuning here now let me call out the notes for you here the sixth string is going to be tuned down to a D alright from there we're gonna have the fifth string tuned down to a G and then the
00:37
fourth string tuned down to a C and we keep you get to keep the third stream the same just a G standard pitch the second string is tuned to a C and then the first string is tuned down to a D so we have that one string we tuned up a half-step that that B string tuned it up to a C now all these dogs together actually makes a G suspended fourth tuning if you really wanted to know the notes but let's just take a look at how to play the thing alright so we're going
01:09
to start here we have a few of the same sections that are repeated again and again now I played through a pretty long section for this whole intro part and then verse just now at the beginning here so let's start this intro with these these chords here we're going to start with the seventh fret on the B and then the seventh fret on the D now what you're gonna do is you're gonna do an upstroke starting from the highest-ranked which is open all the way down with assist ring so just all those are open strings she not
01:40
hitting the sixth string so you did that nice downward strong slow strong and then a little bit of strumming in there they move it down a half step just one fret each the same two notes all right it's really nice all right now when I go here when I hit the fifth string open now I'm gonna call it actually the a string even though we know it's not an A but you know we're used to the standard tune strings always I hope you are so this is the a string throughout the lesson even though it's
02:15
obviously tuned down to a G so we're gonna have the open a string followed by the fifth fret on the d 4th fret on the g and fifth fret on BB hit those notes three um twice then change the note on the b string to a the third fret lead the other two notes there then down to the second fret so this so you strum the whole Cordys time and then we have this core boom which is
02:52
the open a string and then the third fret across the B G had to be do we have this so that's the a string twice now you're gonna borrow the second fret here on the D and the G and you hit the open a with it and then place your third finger there at their fourth pad on the G and hit the same strings again this [Music]
03:39
all right now we go back to the same shape that we did earlier we started the song with more at the 11th fret here so the same two strings we played the sevens on let's go all the way up here to 11th Negus throw them across with this ring then down a 9:12 back to 11 screw this it's the same core shape did move it down to the fourth fret and then you're gonna move it up to the
04:10
night and when you come up here to play the ninth fret this last time you're gonna add the eighth fret there on the a string so we have this C still started five strings some open strings there and then you go back to the same thing so that was basically done twice and now we move into the verse section where
04:47
cells are this all right so what's going on there we're gonna hold this 10th fret on the B 11th on the G and 12th fret on the D you're gonna strum once again you can strum you open a string and you feel free to get the high E string in there too [Music] especially after you storm it slide down one fret for each finger and then stronger core making sure you get the open a and the
05:32
open e in there now you get a change to this chord shape just keep your first finger right side of the 9th fret of the B you know play the 10th fret on the D 10th fret on the G and show across that slow followed by some simple strumming so we're this [Music] and then we're gonna come down here a fifth fret on the D fifth fret on the high E now you go strong across four strings here see this is the root note
06:07
here so we have this did you get a change I removed out the fourth fret on the D and then the open D string and it repeat that and then just repeat the whole thing one more time [Music] all right so we did that three times a little maneuver we slid down and win this line now under the first two verses this well the first two verse which were playing right now the first verse second
06:59
versus instrumental you're going to do that little slide thing into this three times and this the last two verses you do it four times so it's just a little bit longer all right now from here we have this [Music] alright so there's a lot of turtle down here there's obviously an electric guitar part and acoustic and they're doing a lot of the same thing there's just doing a lot of like arpeggiated picking when you're doing
07:32
the electric part so we're really concentrating on the chords that are going on between both parts and then I'll kind of pick and choose out of both whatever is the most prominent thing so you can just play this all along guitar so this is what I'm doing here we do what we did earlier I did this [Music] when we did that earlier so we shouldn't do that court and we're going to back it up with this little line which you're gonna repeat a few times so that's two
08:03
four on the G then zero two on the G the fourth fret on the D back to the open G try this and you're gonna end it with the second fret on the D little slower so that little lick ends each one of these we have this now the next one we're gonna do is the exact same thing so if you're gonna add the third fret here on the D string [Music]
08:43
everything y'all see the same weight before we want this so now just add the third fret on the D and the same ending lick now once again we're gonna do it again but this time we're gonna move up to the fourth fret of the D string and the same way and now up to the fifth fret on D on the B string so that no just it's climbing up the deep
09:17
[Music] I so when you to this last one make sure it's a full bar you're gonna pick across the upper strings and then we go to some chords here now when you're doing these chords in the extra zondra's all the guitar part that's due on some so little fills in there or arpeggiating so I'll let you do what you want to on these cords sometimes it arpeggiated some of those little hammer ons in there
09:53
[Music] but I'll just show you the chords you can strum them if you want we have the fifth fret here we're going to actually a borrow the fourth fret here the first finger then played the fifth fret with your second finger on the a string and then the fifth fret with your your ring finger here on the high E string follow that up with a bar the second threat now across pretty much the 2nd 3rd and 4th strings and you're gonna play the 4th fret on the a and the 4th
10:26
fret of the high e this now feel free just mess with us [Music] all right and then we're gonna have this [Music] all right so we're basically gonna have the second fret on the a string then strum across all the strength getting on a pic second set on the high E and then do a hammer open bolt hammer
11:06
on to pull back off to the open then open B and then the G and maybe down to the D sometimes you kind of mix it up and strum again and then back to that same figure [Music] all right so that's pretty much through most of the sections song he just goes back through that same thing we did the intro just coming just really as a instrumental alright so the thing that's
11:42
gonna change the second time around when we get to these bursts [Music] it's an instrumental part this time the second time through it's still done three times here but what are you gonna do is you gonna add a little bit of some fill so that you're gonna basically tape and then everything else is the same so what's that feel as you're playing this chord that you slid down to pick the g string which is on the tenth fret there they picked the B string at the
12:15
ninth fret hammer on twelve and pull back off the nine [Music] so whenever you see him do it here I'm doing a filter that's pretty much what he's doing [Music] all right so we go through that verse section again the instrumental there's a little bit extended inning before when we just went all right so this ending is a little bit longer the second time through it looks like this
12:57
[Music] [Applause] that's same inning there so there's obviously some stuff going on with those cords I'm going to show you the chords first the same chord we started with down to the same second board back to the previous core and what we're gonna do now is basically play the same chord we did this second fret but up at the
13:38
fifth now back to this back down at same ending so while you're doing those cores feel free to go [Music] you know just kind of mess around with it a little bit all right so then we go back do that same section and the same
14:17
verse again but the verse the third time through these vocals are on at this time you play this part you go through that section four times so make sure you're counting how many times you're playing everything here and now we have the big chorus of the song which we really have with some bigger electric guitars come in there happens at the five minute and one second mark in the song let me play it for you real quick and we'll take a look at it [Music] [Applause] [Music]
15:04
all right so we're gonna do that four times here so we're gonna start with this once there's some guitar layers here too I'm just trying to play the most prominent parts here so this is an open a 2nd fret on the D open G the open E string into the power cord of the second fret up into the third fret but when you get here I really like you gotta kind of smooth you gotta go across all five string so however that's comfortable for you that's comfortable for me just do it with a little finger
15:37
third fret here on the low E and then fifth fret across all the other strings to this chord which is gonna be the fifth fret on the a and fifth fret on the high E you're not gonna hit the sixth string but all the strings in between are open then for two it's kind of a little bass line and then back to that core we started with so far we have this
16:09
[Music] went to get to this chord you're gonna do a hammer three to four on the a to the open G and do that again then we gonna this time the third time through let's go down camera three to four the two on the D back to three on the edges the slide bin and then just start over so all together with that very ending [Music]
16:47
[Applause] you so you do that four times the fourth time you don't do the hammer-ons all right so you just basically before time you go back to the verse now this last verse you're gonna hear somebody everyone someone help that little those little fills on that again all right so the only other part you have to take a look at now is the outro so the outro is at the the you know the end of the song I don't know the exact
17:24
minute marker but it sounds like this [Music] [Applause] [Music]
18:03
all right so that's not really cool ending there so we're gonna start up here at the seventh fret open a string bar the seventh I'll cross the D G and the B and then the ninth fret there on the high E then pick up that knife Fred just to that bar and then move everything down two frets [Applause] and is the same thing 7 release it to the 5 bar [Music] [Applause]
18:36
and then you get to come onto the sub fret on the G and five seven on the high E string so we're this [Music] to this familiar record we did earlier [Music] I then lift up that third finger so it's just to the fourth fret there on the high E then the cord we've seen before back up to this board and the same chord shape
19:09
now at the fifth fret that we did in a second a bend this same chord shape we did here at the seventh and then the same we just did the fifth and second at the eighth fret so it's just two different chord shapes this and here so [Music] then up to the twelfth fret on the high E string and then we start this kind of dissonant picking so he's holding the fifth fret on the B
19:48
sixth on the G seventh on the D you get to pick the open a then pick the fourth string third second and then the open high E string back to the B this and then they pick the g string and the B again to this repeat that all right now I had a little you could probably finger pick this part or just you know do a little bit of hybrid picking you're gonna
20:30
hit the open D string now while you do that you're going to use your middle finger and play the seventh fret on the high E as soon as you pick those two together pull off to the fifth fret there to the seventh I'm gonna start the sixth fret on the B Sammi Tommo G back to six on the beat [Music] do that same pattern now different notes though open D again and the second fret on the high E string when you pick those
21:03
two together pull off through the open and then B G B all right and now we have a little bit kind of a more sustained picking pattern you're gonna pull off the open D again pull off pick the five with it of the high e pull off two three then four on the D I'm you sorry the B string and five on the G then back up [Music]
21:39
and back down from there we're gonna do this we're gonna grab the fifth fret on the a and the fifth fret on a BB you gonna pick it's gonna be three down strokes of one up stroke down on the a string down on the G down on the be up on that open high E string and take this same shape of it down one fret and play the exact same thing then down to the second fret now here we go all the way across back
22:21
down to the B G B and we're gonna end it you basically the play like an a major chord so this one you the shape is at least so this is the second finally they'd be G and the D and then you go strum all six strings and that's about it for the rain song it's a beautiful song interesting tuning as soon as you get that on these fingers nothing's really that hard to play but it sounds fantastic hope you guys enjoyed it I'll see you again soon for Tolleson it's 365.com you
