how do i know if i'm listening to my headphones at safe volume levels how do i know what volume level i'm listening at this was a question that was asked by someone on my discord server but i've seen it asked in a few different places and i figured i'd make a quick video to demonstrate it because it's very easy to test at home all you need is your headphones your source a piece of cardboard and a decibel meter i got this one on amazon for about 15 pounds step one take off the windshield if it has one step two make a hole in the piece of cardboard i just made a cross cut with a knife and then push the probe through it like that it

does not need to be super clean or precise it just needs to not be leaving a massive gap and that's because you need a seal you don't want to be measuring your headphones just like that in the open air because there's going to be more dispersion and especially if it's a planar driver the driver is not going to be behaving in the same way so for that reason you need to make sure that there is a seal around the probe against the pads so once you have your measurement rig ready which of course this is not intended to be super precise if you want to do really precise measurements get a proper headphone measurement rig

this is just intended to give you a close ballpark figure of what level you're listening at and if you are listening at safe volume levels so put the headphones on your head play some music and adjust it to the volume level that you would normally listen at go on the slightly louder side of things because you don't want to be going too quiet and cheating yourself go for what you would normally listen at or consider slightly loud then take them off again hit play keeping the same volume level seal the cardboard against the pads and measure the volume level make sure that the probe is in the rough center of the

pads like that now you can get a continuous measurement i would recommend though that you put it on max mode this will measure the peak volume level so here for example we can see that my peak volume level is around 80 db be careful whilst you're doing this you don't accidentally whack it against the driver itself or you don't make the cardboard squeak or clunk because then you're going to get a massive reading like this which 96 db is not what i'm listening at so let's just reset that so you can see that my peak volume level here is about 80 db and that's all there is to it that way

you know what volume level you're listing at roughly and you know if you need to turn things down if your listening level or peak level anyway is around 90 db or higher you need to start turning things down if it's 80 or less then you're absolutely fine have fun
