the beginning of the second vatican
council
pope john xxiii led the church in
praying
for a fresh outpouring of the holy
spirit renew your wonders
in this our day as buy a new pentecost
a few years later seemingly as a result
of john the 23rd prayer for renewal
a significant event took place that
would forever change the lives
of millions of catholics and the church
itself on a week in retreat
these catholic students prayed that in
00:34
some way they too might discover a
renewed sense of pentecost in their
lives
those who prayed for the experience that
came to be known
as baptism in the spirit had experiences
similar to all the others
a new depth of prayer love for the
scriptures a devotion to the eucharist
a heart for evangelization a call to
conversion
and a life of holiness on pentecost
sunday in 1975
cardinal sunan's and ten thousand
individuals who had this charismatic
experience
01:03
met with pope paul vi we are
pleased to see signs of this vineyard
long life for the charismatics
it is my firm hope that the holy spirit
will find more and more fruitful welcome
in the hearts of believers so that the
culture
of pentecost so necessary in our time
the initiative 50 years ago
and gave rise to an institution

carys is born officially on the day of
pentecost
2019. carys is the new
19:05
and unique service for the catholic
charismatic renewal
as you know carys was
erected by the will of the pope
francis himself
he wanted that the charismatic renewal
would have a new service
and to understand why we need to
enter in the vision of the pope and that
is
what i will try to do in this talk
19:38
and also about the dream
of the pope for the church
but before to speak about that i want to
underline some historical aspects
that charles whitehead didn't develop in
his
wonderful first teaching
so my first point is about
the story here i want to develop
20:09
two points the first
is about the ecumenical ruth
of the charismatic renewal
charles whitehead
has clearly showed in his teaching
that the charismatic renewal is born in
the catholic church
with a communicable rules
let me underline a point
that charles didn't develop
20:42
and that touched me a lot
you remember that charles spoke about
the pope
leo the 13th who launched a novena to
the holy spirit
in his letter pravida matris
what i discovered it is that the
objective of the pope was not
only to open the church to the holy
spirit
but also the unity of the christians
21:15
evidently in this time
he spoke first about the unity of the
catholic church
but it was
wider than that let me read
some sentences he wrote in the language
of this time evidently
from this example of concord among
catholics from this religious commitment
to pray to the divine paraclete we can
21:46
greatly hope that this reconciliation
with the dissident brother this is
one of the words dated i should say
so that the this reconciliation
with the dissident brothers to which we
have dedicated
our efforts so that they too
may feel themselves in themselves the
sentiments which were in christ jesus
participating one day with us in faith
22:17
and hope bound together by the most
sweet bonds of perfect charity
this story astonishes me always
look how the holy spirit
answered the prayer of the pope leo the
13th he was praying for a new effusion
a new outpouring of the holy spirit on
the
20th century and
about the unity of the church the answer
22:52
of the holy spirit was to begin
in the protestant churches and we had to
wait
the vatican council
and the fantastic prayer of
saint john the 23rd
for a new pentecost on the church so
that
would be born in the in the church in
the catholic church the charismatic
renewal
why do i tell you that
23:24
because this story shows what is called
the
ecumenical roots of the catholic
charismatic renewal
and pope francis is deeply convinced
about that it takes part to
his vision as we will see it
later now i arrive to the second point
of my
introduction the renewal
has a current of grace
23:55
let us go back to the story of the
charismatic renewal
in the catholic church charles whitehead
spoke to us about one man who played a
very
important role to help the charismatic
renewal to enter in the church and to be
accepted by the church this man was the
cardinal leon
joseph sunins
archbishop of mali in brussels and one
of the three moderators
24:26
of the council vatican ii
i had the occasion
to know him and to work with him when i
was young because he was my bishop
he met the charismatic renewal in the
united states
and he contributed to introduce it
in the church and in 1975
he led the big pilgrimage of the
charismatic renewal in rome
24:58
and he presented it to the pope
paul vi and it is there
that saint paul paul vi
said this historical sentence the
charismatic renewal is the grace
for the church then
pope paul vi asked the cardinal humans
to accompany
the young charismatic renewal in the
church
and the cardinal did that
25:30
among other things publishing the marlin
documents
which are giving general guidelines
for different subjects important for the
charismatic renewal
the central conviction of the cardinal
students
was that the charismatic renewal was not
a movement but a current of grace
pope francis has taken this conviction
on board what does it mean
26:02
this is what i want to tell you because
i heard
it from the cardinal students himself
at the beginning of the renewal in my
country
he was making the comparison between the
renewal
and the gulf stream which is this
current of warm waters that is crossing
the atlantic ocean and warms up the
waters
and gave to our countries in europe
26:32
their temperate climate he was saying
in the same way that the gulf stream is
warming up the atlantic ocean
and then disappears when he has made
his job in the same way the charismatic
renewal
needs to warm up all the church and
disappear
when he will have done his job which is
to make that all the church would become
charismatic
27:03
this conviction of the cardinal students
was based on the fact that he was
considering
the baptism in the holy spirit that he
was calling outpouring
of the holy spirit he was convinced that
it was a grace
for all the baptized people and that all
the baptized people
were called to live it
this is why the charismatic renewal
for him was not a movement
27:34
in fact a movement is a group
of faithful in the church living the
same spirituality
in consequence you are in a movement
or not you are inside
or outside so for instance
i am a member of a community you are not
others are members of the focularis or
members of sante video others are
28:04
franciscans others are dominicans
this is not the same for the charismatic
renewal
it is not a movement it is a current of
grace indeed
if the baptism in the holy spirit is for
all the christians
then the renewal cannot
be considered as a movement to which you
belong
or not the charismatic renewal
28:34
is for all in this sense
we can say that the charismatic renewal
is
above the movements i
can be a member of the focularis or of
santigidio
and be baptized in the holy spirit
i can be franciscan dominican jesuits
and be baptized in the holy spirit
i can be baptized in the holy spirit
and not belong not not belonging to a
29:09
prayer group
i can be baptized in the holy spirit and
not to pray
with my my hands like that
the charismatic renewal is a current of
grace
simply because the baptism in the holy
spirit
is the actualization of the grace
of our own sacramental baptism
and this is what the cardinal pharaoh
explained
29:40
to the brazilian bishop in last january
he said why is the charismatic renewal
such a current
this is due to its very identity
what characterizes the charismatic
renewable
is the experience of baptism in the holy
spirit
this experience can be received by any
baptized
person because it simply reflects
baptism itself it can be
30:11
said that to receive baptism in the holy
spirit
is simply to live fully all the graces
that we are received at one sacramental
baptism
in this sense the renewal is a current
of grace
from which everyone can benefit
i arrive to my third point of my
intro historical introduction the
support of the popes
as charles whited underlined it
30:46
strongly all the popes
since paul vi supported
strongly the charismatic renewal saint
john paul ii received many times the
leaders of the charismatic renewal
and encourage them pope benedict xvi did
the same
he did it as cardinal prefect of the
congregation for the doctrine of fate
and then as pope we can say
that since his birth
31:20
the charismatic renewal received a
strong support
from all popes but with the coming of
pope francis this support has
taken an incredibly
larger dimension as we will see now
in my second point the vision of pope
francis
to understand the vision of pope francis
about the charismatic renewal
we need to go back to his personal story
31:53
at the beginning as archbishop of buenos
aires
cardinal bergoglio was suspicious
of the renewal he said publicly
that he was considering the renewal as a
samba school
and even before as superior of the
argentina
jesuits he even forbade them to
participate in the meetings of the
renewal
but when he discovered the grace of the
charismatic
32:23
renewal from inside through the
remarkable work of the leaders of the
charismatic renewal in argentina
cardinal bergoglio changed his mind
and there was an important event
that marks a turning point in the
understanding of cardinal bergoglio
for the charismatic renewal and the
unity of the christian
this is the economical meeting
32:54
in the lunar park of buenos aires in
2006
in this meeting
asked the prayer of a group of
evangelical pastors
evangelical argentinian pastors well
known in the country
one italian pastor giovanni
become a friend of the country
the relation of the cardinal with the
34:11
renewal changed
in such a way that when he met the
leaders
of the renewal in rome
when he was the pope he spoke with them
about the renewal saying us
i think that we can say that pope
francis
feels part of the current of grace
up to now we had popes
sustaining the renewal today
34:44
we have a pope who feels
himself part of the current of grace
and this changes everything
first point in my second point the
vision of the pope
it is the current of grace for all the
church
the first conviction in the vision of
the pope
about the charismatic renewal it is that
following the cardinal students he
considers
35:18
the charismatic renewal as a current of
grace
he said it many times and the
consequence of that
is the desire of the pope that all the
christians
would be touched by this current of
grace
and would receive the baptism in the
holy spirit
the pope has made different times
references to that encouraging the
charismatic renewal
to spread the baptism in the holy spirit
35:51
asking to the parish priests to make the
seminar
in the life for the life in the spirit
in their parish
and finally giving to charis
the task to make the baptism in the holy
spirit
noun in all the church the pope was
very clear on this point on the
pentacles 2019 he said
i would ask you to share baptism in the
holy spirit
with everyone in the church it is the
36:23
grace
you receive share it
in recife in last june cardinal farrell
said to the leaders of some charismatic
communities the holy father pope francis
considers all the members and all the
expressions
of the charismatic renewal as
cooperators
in his patron ministry
this is wonderful but somebody
36:55
wanted to know what does it mean
how can we be a support of the patron
ministry of the pope
cardinal farrell answered something like
that
you know the pope may not
all the time speak about the baptism in
the holy spirit
and you understand well why
but i can tell you that every time
he speaks about new evangelization
37:28
evangelization meeting with
jesus life conversion
he is thinking to the baptism in the
holy spirit
this answer touched me
a lot because it shows
the deep wish of the pope about the
charismatic renewal
he is expecting a renewal
of the christian life for all the
baptized people
38:00
and he knows that this renewal
will be the fruit of the experience of
the baptism in the holy spirit
this is the reason why he
needs us members of the charismatic
renewal
to help him in this task
here i want to say something very
important
after all what i just have said
a human reaction could be
pride we could be
38:38
proud to be member members of the
charismatic renewal
we could say in ourselves great
we are charismatics we are the better in
the world
if we open the door to this temptation
we are lost for the renewal
to be able to respond to the pope's
expectations
he must be humble we
are nothing without the holy spirit
39:09
we need to become small
to let the holy spirit to work
through us remember this
terrible word of saint peter
god resists the proud but it is to the
humble
that he gives his grace
let us go now to the second point of the
vision of pope francis
on the renewal the communion
39:42
he was art bishop of buenos aires
cardinal bergoglio
discovered that the charismatic renewal
was divided
and even that you had raptures
between prayer groups and communities
inside of the renewal
the prayer groups refused to recognize
that the communities the charismatic
communities
were taking part to the renewal there
were some
interdictions for the members of the
prayer group
40:13
to speak in the communities and so on
cardinal bergoglio asked that that would
stop and that they would live
in communion and for that edie solved
the national team of the charismatic
renewal which was
in fact only taking care of the prayer
groups
to create a new instance
which would put together all the
expressions of the current of grace
40:46
prayer groups communities school of
evangelization
tv networks and so on
we have not to be surprised that
when he became pope the holy father
decided to promote the communion inside
of the current of grace
and this is why he asked to the leaders
of the egress and the catholic
fraternity
to work for a new and unique service
41:18
for the renewal and this is
how carys was born
we can ask ourselves but why
the pope has
such big desire of communion
i think the answer is very simple
you understood that the pope is
expecting a lot
from the charismatic renewal and this is
not
41:49
possible if the renewal is divided
if the ones are rejecting the others
or criticizing the one and the others
if we want that the current of grace
would be able to share the baptism in
the holy spirit
in all the church
it is needed that the renewal would
be united would live in communion
and for that conversions are
42:23
requested from us
for example in many countries there is
already a structure taking care of the
prayer groups
which is called in general national
theme of the charismatic renewal
but they don't take care of all the
charismatic renewal
they take care only of the prayer groups
so they are using the name of the whole
reality for a part
42:55
we need to consider that the
renewal is a current of grace
with many expressions in which you have
prayer groups but also communities
ministries
schools of evangelization editing
houses tv network centers of prayer
and so on and so in our countries
instead of to speak about national team
of charismatic renewal
43:26
we would need to say
national team of the prayer groups of
the charismatic renewal
but don't forget that caris proposes
also a national service of communion
i will speak about later
the third point in the vision of the
pope is the unity of the christian
this is a main aspect of the communion
which is very important to the heart of
the pope
43:59
the communion between the christians of
different
churches of different ecclesial
communities
we have seen that the roots of the
charismatic renewal
are ecumenical the pope is a man of
unity
and he is convinced that the experience
of the baptism in the holy spirit
can serve as a bridge between
christians of different ecclesial
communities
how it is
44:30
not trying to solve
theological problems the pope said one
day that
for that we would need to send all the
theologians of the
world on isolate island
and let them work to the end of the
times
what the pope has in view when he speaks
about
unity it is what we can call
relational ecumenism in other words
45:01
the communism of friendship
mutual friendship we can
become friends of christians
of other ecclesial groups we can pray
together
we can broke the walls that we have
built let me give one example
there is a movement called john 17
which is very dear
to the pope this movement is
45:34
founded by pastor and american pastor
joe tossini
and you will meet him during this
formation
the pope encountered the group
john 17 several times and between them
you had a baptist pastor very rigid
when he came for the first time to the
vatican to the meeting with the pope
he was deeply touched when he came back
for the second time he gave his
46:06
testimony
in front of the pope he said something
like that
holy father i am a baptist pastor
son of pastor son of pastor third
generation
in my church we are not considering
the catholic church very well
when i came here for the first time
i was totally surprised nothing
was all i was thinking it would be
46:38
i saw that my ideas about the catholic
church
were wrong back at whom in the united
states
i had to change my pastoral
here we see in practice
how the construction of relations
can change a way to see the other
this type of relational communism
47:08
we can do it every one of us we can do
it
we can search to become friends of other
christians
and this network of friendship can
change
things we can say in such
a way that this is the construction of
the unity
from the bottom from the people of god
another point important in the vision of
the pope
it is the service of the poor
47:40
this is the third line
that the pope is underlining we know
how the pope is attached to the little
ones the sick
the suffering the migrants the excluded
he asked to the renewal to have the same
love the same charity for the poor
we are as charismatic
we receive the outpouring of the holy
spirit
48:12
and the holy spirit is love so
normally because we are full of the holy
spirit
we would have to be burning
weaknesses of love
and i have to say that since one year
i have seen very beautiful
testimonies of charity inside of the
renewal
it is really wonderful i think to this
young charismatic people
48:45
going on the street to leave with the
homeless people in brazil or to these
prayer groups in africa taking care of
the prisoners
and there are many other examples
in this manner the pope is
interpreting us and
us in our prayer groups and our
community
how do we lead the charity for the poor
49:16
if we want to spread the baptism in the
holy spirit
we need to grow in the exercise
of the love for the poor
in summary pope francis
has a big hope about the renewal
he expects from it
a help to transform the church through
the experience of the baptism in the
holy spirit
spread widely in a spirit of unity
49:49
and charity now we can
arrive to caris itself
and to the novelty of carys
this is my third point carys
is born at the pentecost 2019
and you understood that it was the will
of the pope
himself caris is a service
it is the unique service of the current
of grace that
is the charismatic renewal in the
catholic church
50:22
let me underline some points
the first one is the public legal
personality
that carries received from the holy see
this is a technical term
which needs some explanation
in the church you have two types of
associations
the private ones and the public ones
a private association is
50:53
serving its own members
for instance the associations
of the catholic
jurists of italy is taking care of the
jurists
in italy but not of the teacher
of the or of the doctors
only its members
a public association is erected by the
church
to serve all the baptized people and not
51:25
only its members giving to charis
a public juridic personality
the church has put caries
in her heart and she shows
through that that carries is not only to
serve the members of the charismatic
renewal
but to serve all the baptized people
and this is the consequence the clear
consequence of what i developed
51:57
before it is to share
the baptism in the holy spirit in the
whole church
second point caris is a service
as a service carries as no member
nobody can say i belong to carys
caris is a service for the charismatic
renewal
but it doesn't identify with the renewal
and so one of the consequences of that
52:28
it is that the moderator of caris is not
the leader of the charismatic renewal as
current of grace
i am not that who is in charge of the
current of grace
the holy spirit and nobody else
so caris proposes a service
nobody is obliged to use this service
we can compare carries to a gas station
on the highway that offers many services
52:59
gasoline toilets rest area
coffee picnic and so on when you arrive
at the gas station on the highway
you can stop or not it depends
on your needs in the same way with
carries
you can use its
service or not everybody
is free and what are the services that
carries proposes
53:29
first of all the communion
caris is in charge to create the
communion
in the current of grace that is the
charismatic renewal
and for that the stages of caris
are providing three groups
i should say the first is the
international service of communion
the second the continental service of
communion
and the third one the national service
of communion
54:01
you see that in every group two words
are common
service and communion in this
national service of communion of caries
it is us that all the expressions of the
renewal
in the country would be represented
it is it means the prayer groups the
communities the school of
evangelization the editing houses the
priests of the renewal
the radio or the tv stations
54:34
ministries the center of prayer and so
on and so on
the holy spirit has a lot of imagination
and the first objective of this
national service of communion is to live
the communion
and then to serve there is a coordinator
of the charis national service of
communion
caution he is not the responsible of the
renewal
i remember you that the only responsible
55:03
is the holy spirit the communion is also
facilitated through the work
of the office of rome the charis office
of rome
which is editing magazine news
regularly this is a
way to put all the renewal in contact
and we are doing it in
five languages you can ask it for free
on the website of carries another remark
55:34
the existence of the national service of
communion
doesn't cancel the other services
existing
in one country so in particular
if you had national themes of the
renewal
they can go on in the service they were
giving
but remember what i said before
it is necessary to change their name and
to call
them national teams of the prayer groups
of the charismatic renewal as i
56:06
explained before another service that
carries proposes
it is the formations for leaders for
servant
leaders in the charismatic renewal
because i remember you that
that pope francis asked that we would no
more
use the word leader but the word
servant because as responsible
we are serving the charismatic renewal
we are the servants
56:36
there is also a formation for the
prophetic intercession
and formation for the exercise of the
characterism
i think that this last formation is very
important
that i it seems to me
that in many countries there is a
diminution
of the exercise of the charism it is a
pity
and i don't think it is the will of the
holy spirit
it is necessary i think to awaken in us
the zeal
57:06
for the exercise of charisms
we are also preparing a formation for
ecumenism and you see that you are
taking part to another formation
online formation for
servant leaders with the worldwide
crisis of the pandemic
of the cavite 19 we are
understanding that our proposal of
formation
has to be adapted to the new
57:37
circumstances
and we are working on it to create
new online formation that
you will be able to follow from
all around the world you can pray for
that
another service is for the communities
caris proposes a service for the
communities
coming from the charismatic renewal it
is first of all
a service of communion because many
58:09
communities
have the desire to know one another
and to help one another through this
communion
caris wants to help also the communities
to face some big challenges
for instance how to
avoid authority abuses
how to evangelize the young people
which is a priority for us as
58:40
charismatic members
in these areas the sharing of experience
between communities
is very important caris proposes also a
canonical help for the communities that
have to draw up their status
with a view to ecclesial recognition
another service it is the young people
carries has a special attention for the
59:11
youth
and they have a special place a big
place in our statutes
for instance they are represented
at every level national continental
international this is a big challenge
for the charismatic renewal
today to evangelize the young people
and for that we need to trust in them
we need to give them responsibilities
59:43
that implies also that the
actual leaders would let their
responsibilities
for the young ones this is the reasons
why the mandates of caries at every
level
are of three years renewable
one times only don't be
afraid to give place to the young people
i ask you a question when the holy
01:00:14
spirit
wanted to begin the charismatic renewal
in the catholic church
where did he go in all
people's home no
he went in a university and the first
leaders of the charismatic renewal were
young people
of 21 22 years old
and instead of their inexperience
the spread renewal in the entire world
01:00:45
in a few years the holy spirit
has put his trust in young people
let us do the same let us trust
in them this implies humility
on the part of many current leaders who
must
learn to withdraw
as john the baptism was saying
i need to decrease and he needs
to grow another service is the
01:01:16
organization of big meetings
carys is also in charge to organize
meetings of communion for
the all charismatic renewal
a beautiful example was the prayer that
we organized
in the vigil of the last pentecost
online for the world
the entire world but uh
we had also an international meeting of
communities
in recife in last january and the
01:01:48
pentecost in rome in 2019
the statutes are providing also that we
would have
every three years a general assembly of
carries
in which we will have the elections of
the moderator
and the members of the service the
international service of communion
let me arrive to my last point
evangelization
and holiness i want to say two words
about these two realities which are
01:02:18
essential in the work of carys
the pope asks us a renewal of
the evangelization his call to
spread the baptism in the holy spirit
in the whole church is in fact a call to
the mission
we will not be faithful to this
call if we not decide
to become evangelizators
remember what i said earlier
01:02:51
the pope associates the baptism in the
holy spirit
with the evangelization and there is
another essential
element holiness
we could all see that the fact
that we exercise the charisms even
extraordinary charisms doesn't
imply holiness we have seen
unfortunately around us many
01:03:21
examples of founders who failed
in this area one of the services of
carries
is to remember us that we are all
called to holiness all what i said since
the beginning
can be resumed by the word holiness
holiness will push
us to live communion charity
evangelization unity of the christian
that jesus
01:03:52
desires so much holiness
will help us to put at their just place
the charisms
in the humility of the service of the
church
holiness is the fruit of the action of
the holy spirit
because the holy spirit is the one who
makes us
holy let us allow ourselves
to be led by the holy spirit that is
what
it means to be truly charismatic
01:04:24
i come to my conclusion we entered
in a new step of the story of the
charismatic renewal with the coming of
pope francis
the doors of the church are widely open
to the renewal this is a sign
of the holy spirit and the holy spirit
is asking
us are you ready to follow me
to make noun around you the
marvelous grace that i gave to you the
baptism
01:04:54
in the holy spirit i have chosen you
as my messengers
i open for you the doors of the church
so go and let
be known all what you received
from me dear friends
dear brothers and sisters the world
is expecting a new pentecost
god needs us to be his
instruments don't be
01:05:27
afraid here we are oh lord
to do your will
