hi welcome to watch it played my name is Rodney Smith in this video we're going to learn the 1 to 5 player game mansions of madness second edition designed by Nikki Valens based on a design by Corey conditio and published by Fantasy Flight Games many rumors surrounded the great mansion and from the outside it did appear dark and mysterious but you and your fellow investigators knew this was no simple haunting something great and fearsome lurked in its dark corners will you stop the madness within or fall prey
00:55
to it the world is depending on you so join me at the table and let's learn how to play to set up you'll need the mansions of madness companion app which you can get for free on iOS Android Mac and Windows these are the double-sided map tiles sort them into piles nearby based on their size and also put out these monsters which the first time you open the game you'll need to attach to the bases and also insert in the appropriate tokens you can follow the instructions for this here in the rule book and once assembled you'll never
01:27
need to take them apart the game comes with a variety of tokens which you should sort by type and keep within reach along with the games dice in separate art side up piles distinguished by their graphic design create the common item unique item spell and condition decks it's recommended to keep each of these in alphabetical order these are the horror and damage decks which you can shuffle and place facedown for this video I'll keep many of these components completely off-screen and just pull from them as necessary
01:57
players should now go through the various included investigators and each choose one taking the matching miniature if you want to play the game on your own you can just choose any two investigators to control which I'll do here with Carson and Rita and then unused investigators can be returned to the box I should mention if you have any of the first edition products for mansions of madness this second edition includes a conversion kit in the box which will allow you to bring those monsters tiles and old investigators into your new
02:29
adventures now we'll go back to the app I won't go through all of its settings but know this is where you would be able to continue a game that you started previous but weren't able to finish in one sitting this is also where you go to add in the other elements that you might own from the first edition for now we'll stick to the second edition and in the main menu we'll pick new game from here we can pick any one of the four included scenarios for your first game they suggest cycle of eternity then you can tap here and from here you will select
03:01
the investigators that the players chose when you're ready tap here to gain your starting items these you'll collect from the decks that we created earlier some items are spells like this one which have multiple copies when claiming a spell you just pick one of them randomly as a group players will decide how to distribute these items keeping in mind that there is no limit to how much a character can carry you may also be instructed to collect some other items for example down here it says each investigator begins with two clue tokens these come from the token piles that we
03:33
created earlier now we'll tap continue setup here and let the screen load one thing I should mention is that the application does have sound which I've turned off during this video I'll turn it on again now as I tap begin scenario after listening to the introduction we can press Continue after a quick moment we'll be given more text but this will not be narrated by the app instead a player can read it aloud as it will instruct us how to lay out the beginning tiles of our game not only are they shown on screen but each tile has a
04:08
marked name which is also referred to in the text there's also a symbol and this reminds you of what said it comes from in case you chose to include some first-edition components or other expansions during the setup we may also be told to place out additional elements like this green outlined wall token a wall token will cover up a door that you're not going to be using in the game that you're playing as we press continue the app will now tell us to place our figures in the entrance of this mansion and they will proceed to follow all of the other instructions as they come up
04:40
within the app these will describe other elements that we need to place and we'll do that until eventually we are shown in animation for the beginning of the investigators phase now the tiles that you've set up on the table should look the same as what you see within the app and I do want to point out that although a scenario may have an overall story it's telling each time you play many aspects of it will change altering the experience for the players so the layout of the mansion what these different tokens represent the monsters that you encounter these
05:11
will be generated on the fly by the application itself and in this video I'll jump to various stages within this scenario to help me illustrate the rules as needed but I'll try to avoid spoiling key events and that's the setup in mansions of madness players will be working together to try to unravel the mysteries of the scenario and figure out what they have to do to win all the while avoiding death and insanity the game is played over a series of rounds broken into two phases each starting
05:40
with the investigators phase here each player will get a single turn you can take those turns in any order but on your turn you will perform up to two same or different actions so let's learn right now what those different actions are first it's worth noting that investigators each have a unique ability that's listed here some like this one will indicate that you must spend an action to use it while others are always active so keep these in mind during the game a move action allows you to move
06:11
your investigator up to two spaces one at a time and you may interrupt your movement to perform a different action and then resume moving an area like this surrounded by brown wall borders broken up by doors is a room and sometimes a room is just a single space like these or broken into several spaces by a solid white line a moving investigator must go from one space to an adjacent one and may walk through doors into rooms that have already been revealed but they cannot walk through walls or impassable
06:42
borders which are represented by dashed yellow or white lines there are also secret passage tokens like these and an investigator can move from a space with one into a space with another as if they were adjacent now let's learn about the search action which you can perform by interacting with one of these tokens in your space simply find but within the app you can freely tap on any token shown on the map at any time and it will give you a bit of descriptive text to remind you of what
07:13
it is only if you tap on a command showing this icon here are you considered to have used an action so just make sure you have an action to spend when you would do this during a search you'll be given further instructions about what to do which may include performing a skill test which you'll recognize when you see a skill symbol like this many actions in the game will require skill tests so let's learn about those now characters have six skills listed here each showing their own unique symbols when a test
07:42
refers to a particular skill lor in this case the investigator rolls a number of dice equal to that skills value so in this case for sometimes the test itself or other effects may modify the number of dice that you need to roll in this case the player would roll their observation plus one bonus die but even if a modifier would reduce the number of dice you would roll to zero you always roll at least one if you would ever need to roll more dice than the number available roll all of them record your
08:13
results and then reroll any extra as required either way you now need to total your successes which include all dice showing this elder sign symbol a player may then return to the supply clue tokens that they have and for each they may change any investigation result which shows a magnifying glass into a success in this case we've achieved three successes some tests like this one require you to enter the number of successes rolled and then tap confirm the app will then tell you what happens
08:44
it may be that you did not achieve enough successes and you'll need to take the test again later to add more to your previous totals which the app will remember other tests like this one indicate a minimum number of successes you must achieve in order to pass roll less than this and you fail you then resolve the pass or fail effect as described finally in some cases you're asked to take a test to negate a negative effect for example in this case a cultist is about to cause an investigator to suffer two facedown
09:15
damage but that investigator may roll number of dice equal to their agility plus one extra die and each success they roll negates one of those damages if they roll at least two successes they'll suffer no damage at all going back to the different types of actions let's take a look at interactions sometimes the game instructs you to put tokens out that you can interact with such as the butler here well in the same space you can then tap on it in the app and then choose to take one of these presented options at this point you haven't spent
09:47
an action but if you choose either of these two responses when interacting with the butler they show the action symbol and will use up one that you have that turn instead you may choose the final action to ignore him and that won't cost you any actions at all a player can also take actions found directly on components they control these will be marked with the word action and you simply follow their instructions to resolve them some items that you've picked up can be further used from within the app by tapping this inventory button and then selecting the
10:17
object here the action you can take with it you'll find on the screen you may also sometimes be told to place these site tokens which represent areas of the board that have not yet been revealed to activate one of these an investigator must be in the same space then you can tap the token and then you'll be able to reveal but notice this does not have an action symbol so it will not cost you an action to do this this simply represents an investigators ability to now be able to see into an area that was once around a corner a trade action can be taken by
10:49
an investigator allowing them to give or take any number of possessions from any number of other investigators in their space while at the same time dropping off or picking up any number of possessions there as well possessions are specifically common items unique items or spells they do not include clue tokens so you cannot give these to another player or drop them in a space during the game if you gain a common or unique item you take it from the appropriate deck arts side up let's say that Carson here was told that he
11:20
could collect some dynamite we would search through the deck find the dynamite and then put it with his character some items are double-sided like this dynamite and you can always examine the and read its text at any time if you're instructed to gain a spell you'll find several copies of it in the spell deck claim a random one and place it outside up in front of you but do not examine its back until you're instructed to flip it over when you're in a space and activate an explorer token like this within the app then you're taking an
11:52
Explorer action which will reveal more areas of the board you will typically be instructed to add new tiles and tokens often this will conclude by giving you the option to move freely into the room which does not use up one of your actions for that turn when monsters enter the board you can use an action to attack them if you're attacking with a weapon or spell that shows this melee symbol the monster must be in your space if instead it shows this ranged weapon symbol the target must be within range
12:23
this is a distance up to three spaces away so if instead the cultist was in this space reading young with her revolver would still have it within range however you cannot count this distance through walls or doors so this deep one is not within range that said impassable barriers like these dashed lines do not block range monsters are introduced by the app but they will not physically appear on the board itself instead to attack a monster tap this middle button here to open the
12:53
monster drawer then select your valid target for the attack in this case a cultist now we pick this attack option and then the weapon or spell we're using from this list each weapon will indicate its type right here and in this case we're going to use a firearm you can even attack a monster if you have no weapons just choose attack unarmed but thankfully we have a gun you then resolve the presented steps often performing a skill test and if you do damage to the monster press the plus or minus symbols here so that when you
13:24
attack it again later it will still retain the previous damage when a monster's damage equals its health which is the value shown here than it is killed and you remove it from the board after confirming that it's dead if you accidentally hit the plus too many times you can cancel and adjust the damage as an aside players should also read the bottom of a monsters base when it comes into play to see if it has any special abilities that would affect its behavior during the game it also has other information but we'll examine that a little bit later pushing is another
13:55
action you can perform either on a willing or unwilling target in your space if it is a willing target like an investigator controlled by a player who wants to be pushed you place it into a legal adjacent space and then the investigator who did the push may also move one space in that direction if the target is unwilling say a monster or investigator that does not want to be moved then you must first perform a test when trying to push a monster perform a strength test with your investigator and attempt to get a number of successes at
14:26
least equal to the monsters brawn which is the value here so in this case Rita would need to roll at least two successes if instead she was trying to push an unwilling investigator perhaps Carsen in this case the target of the push would first roll their strength 3 in this case and to the number of successes they roll ad 1 so here Carson is a total of three successes the pushing investigator now needs to roll at least that many successes when testing their strength in either case when pushing an unwilling investigator
14:57
or monster if the test succeeds resolve the push as normal if it fails the action is lost and nothing happens you may be wondering if the game is cooperative then why would a player ever push an investigator that doesn't want to be shoved around well sometimes these investigators go mad on their adventures and start to behave erratically as we'll see later speaking of which another action you can take is to steal from an investigator to do this choose one in your space for example Rita might choose to steal from Carson then pick two
15:28
either test strength agility or observation let's say Rita chose to test agility both players then roll a number of dice equal to their value in that skill if the stealing player rolls more successes they may steal one possession for each success exceeding their targets result otherwise they failed and the action is lost so if Rita had two more successes than Carson rolled she could steal up to two possessions remember clue tokens are not considered possessions so they can not be stolen during this action another
16:01
action is to set fire this can be done if a player has an item defined as a light source in which case they can use it to place a fire token in their space or an adjacent one as long as it doesn't already contain fire now go to the in-game menu here and pick the set fire action and confirm it this will help the app assist you later anytime an investigator enters a space with fire or if they're in a space with fire and take any action except for a movement out of that space they take a facedown damage
16:32
will discuss investigate or damage in detail a little bit later if a monster starts its activation in a space with fire or moves into such a space it suffers one damage we add that by selecting the monster from the monster drawer and adjusting its damage here as we saw before as an action an investigator may test their agility and for each success they discard a fire token from their space or a space they move into later that round and this action does not damage them so Rita here is a little concerned about all this fire and she rolls for agility and
17:03
achieves three successes so she could remove a fire token from her own space and later if she moves she can also remove one fire token from each of these spaces on the other hand if she had failed to roll successes when trying to put out fire she'd take a facedown damage as normal if there's a barricade token in an investigator's space they can use an action to move it against or away from a door investigators and monsters may not move through doors that are blocked this way if the barricade is
17:34
on the opposite side of a door that the player is trying to move through then instead they must perform a strength test and if they were all two or more successes the barricade is pushed away and they may move through otherwise the movement action fails if a monster would try to move through a barricade no matter which side of the door that it's on it must first roll a number of dice equal to its brawn again this is found here on the bottom so - in this case they as well need to roll at least two elder signs and if they do the barricade
18:06
token is discarded and the monster moves as normal otherwise it gets blocked and can't move further earlier I mentioned that investigators can suffer damage but they may also suffer horror either way for each point received the investigator gains a card from either the damage or horror deck as required and unless otherwise stated you always flip them face up one at a time and then check their effect if it says resolved immediately then follow its instructions in this case the player would discard one clue if they had one and then
18:36
oftentimes it concludes by requiring you to flip the card facedown sometimes the effect will inform you to keep it face out meaning it will have an ongoing effect or it may tell you to discard the damage after it's resolved for this next example I've given poor Carson quite a bit of damage and even some horror facedown damage or horror can never be examined unless an effect would flip it over and if it tells you to flip one face up and you have several to choose from make sure you do so randomly if you're told to flip a horror or damage card facedown then you can choose which one
19:07
you want likewise if you'd be able to heal damage or horror you can discard either a specific face-up one or a random facedown one either way all collected damage whether face up or down counts against the investigators total health which is shown here and all horror counts the same way against this sanity value as soon as the total damage an investigator has equals or exceeds in investigators health they become wounded right now Carson has seven damage and let's say he was due to receive two more if these were to be resolved as face-up
19:38
damage then you would do that as normal one at a time and then assuming his damage still exceeded his health you discard all of his facedown damage and he gains the wounded condition in this conditions deck there are multiple copies of a variety of different conditions that will alter the players abilities at this time the player now needs to collect the wounded condition specifically an investigator can never have more than one copy of the same condition affecting them and normally you would ignore a second copy that would be applied but if an investigator
20:09
would qualify to gain a second wounded condition let's say that Carson once again had eight damage he is instead eliminated from the game any possessions he has are then dropped in his current space and his figure is removed from the board all remaining investigate then get one final investigators phase to win the game if they fail to win after that point they go to the in-game menu and select the investigator eliminated option and then tap end game where you will then get your game ending
20:41
narrative players also lose if all of the investigators are eliminated in that case you then tap here to go to the in-game menu press end game and then again to confirm your loss if an investigator would suffer horror equal to or greater than their sandy rating they first discard all facedown horror cards and then go insane gaining one of these insane conditions randomly then without showing the other players they privately read its back as it will instruct them of a new secret objective they need to accomplish one that may
21:13
have them working to hinder the other players or simply behave in bizarre ways each and sanity card requires a certain number of players as shown here if you have fewer than those listed as I do since I set up a solo game you discard and draw a new one until the value here would be included in your number of players remember you can never reveal the insane condition text or explain it to the other players if an already insane investigator once again receives horror equal to or greater than their sanity value they are eliminated and you
21:45
follow the same steps as we saw when a player is eliminated due to damage occasionally during the game an investigator will take an action with an object in the app which requires them to solve a puzzle you may attempt to solve the puzzle by executing a number of steps equal to your skill value as indicated in the app in this case we're told we'll be using our lure if Rita Jung was working on this puzzle that means she'd be able to perform three steps in this example we're looking at a slide puzzle I need to get the image back into it's correct appearance and
22:16
I'll attempt this by dragging one piece of it to an adjacent piece causing them to swap places that counts as a step and I can continue completing steps until I run out of points in my skill at that point I can then spend clue tokens and for each one spent I can perform another step once you solve a puzzle the app will inform you and tell you what happens next but if you fail it will remember or where you left off when you hit the close button here then you or another investigator can attempt it again with a future action avaible you can see the
22:47
puzzle here is just as I left it this is a code puzzle where you need to figure out the symbols or numbers that belong in the space is here this can be made up of any form of combination of ones found at the top and some of them may even repeat a single step in this puzzle is taken by dragging options from the top into the spaces as you like and when you're ready you then tap guess the app will then provide you with feedback each elder sign shown means that one of the symbols or numbers is the correct one
23:18
and it's in the right space while each magnifying glass means you chose a right number or symbol but it's in the wrong space in this case as I'm only being shown two symbols here it means that one of my numbers doesn't even belong in this code you can then take another guess if able using this information and all of it will be remembered for future actions if it's not completed on the first attempt this is a lock puzzle you perform a step in this one by dragging a piece in either direction as far as you like along the same path as its length
23:49
so this piece would go side to side I could move it here while this one will only go up and down to solve this puzzle you need to get this unique piece into the space here during the game you may be instructed to place darkness tokens on the board while in a dark space like Carson is here the investigator cannot spend clue tokens for extra guesses while trying to solve a puzzle or to convert dice to successes when taking any kind of skill test however if the investigator is in or adjacent to a
24:19
space with fire or an item labeled as a light source for example Rita here who is carrying a light source then the darkness is ignored take note while a wall would block light doors do not block an adjacent light source after all the investigators have taken or forfeited their actions they move on to the mythos phase by tapping the button here and confirming after a brief loading screen if you had told the app that there was a fire in the house it will prompt you to now let it know whether the fire has been extinguished or if it's still burning if the fire
24:51
tokens have all been removed then tap fire extinguished here otherwise the fire will spread and as instructed here players will then decide on a space adjacent to the current fire where they will place a new fire token while fire cannot spread through a solid wall it may spread through a secret passage or a door even if it's barricaded but no matter how much fire is already in the house you only place a single new fire token during this step in this case the players might decide that with the fire in this space with
25:21
the monster as the mythos phase continues you'll be directed to follow the instructions of the app sometimes you'll get a mythos event which is a narrative challenge that usually includes a test for a player or players to resolve through these events or because of players exploring monsters may get put into play in the mythos phase you'll be instructed to activate each of them sometimes you may have more than one of the same monster in play if so when the second copy arrives the app will have shown a symbol with it this reminds you place the matching token
25:52
into that monsters base to distinguish it from the other ones that share a similar model when monsters activate the application will tell you how they move and attack so simply resolve the effects as presented when it comes to monster movement if it would move towards the closest to investigator a certain number of spaces then it stops as soon as it enters an investigator's space even if it had left over movement on the other hand if you're told that the monster would move a certain distance to be within range of a certain type of investigator then it will move through
26:24
other investigators spaces without stopping to try to achieve that goal after all the monsters activate you'll be instructed that each player must make a horror check against the monster within their range that has the highest horror rating this is the value shown in blue that you'll find on the monsters base if there is a tie for the highest horror rating among valid monsters for example let's say these two were both within range of our investigators here then the players decide which of the two monsters they want to test against this
26:54
is true not just in horror checks but in any case where a game effect would have more than one possible outcome or where multiple effects would seem to trigger at the same time in those cases if the rules or app provide no guidance players break the tie and decide the resolution now getting back to the horror check to perform it find the monster that you're testing against here in the monster drawer and tap it then confirm and follow the instructions as presented if more than one investigator is performing a check against the same monster which
27:24
would be the case in this room here they all perform the same presented check if an investigator is not within range of a monster then they can just ignore this step once all of the checks have been resolved tap the symbol here to end the mythos phase once you confirm which will now begin a new investigators phase one rule we didn't cover yet is evading if a character is in a space with one or more monsters and wants to move out of it or perform any other action aside from attacking one of those monsters they
27:54
must first conduct an evade test if there are several monsters in the space you only perform the evade against the one with the highest awareness this is the green value shown here on the monsters base so in this case this is the monster that Rita has to avoid you then choose that monster from the drawer and then press the evade option here after confirming you'll then resolve the presented challenge and if you succeed you continue with your action but if you fail the app may cause you to forfeit your action or suffer some other result some effects you resolve will force you
28:26
to move for example it will say move to spaces not you may move to spaces or move up to two spaces in those cases an evade check is not required as the movement is considered involuntary as you play and unravel the mysteries presented to you the scenarios objective will be revealed if you can complete that the application will inform you that you've won and you'll receive a closing narrative if the investigators get eliminated or you take too long to solve the investigation the game may get
28:57
harder the objectives may change and eventually you'll be informed that you lost if you're unable to finish a game within a single sitting you can go to the in-game menu and save your progress by tapping here after confirming you then need to record your characters and all related items in their possession including damage or horror they have received as you'll need to be able set that back up on your own you may want to take a quick picture of the board as well just as a reminder of the monsters that you had in play along with any other unique features not tracked by
29:28
the application when you're ready to resume press Continue and then confirm your saved scenario will take a few seconds to load then you can tap begin you'll see now that the app has remembered where you left off and you're ready to resume your investigation once you have the board set up again I also want to direct your attention to the message log which you'll find here in the in-game menu this lets you go back through all the displayed messages during the game in case you need to review something that you forgot I also want to point out that clues darkness and fire tokens are not limited by the
30:00
number of them included in the game if you would need to place more and you run out just use a suitable replacement the same goes for dice if you need to roll more than are provided just record your results and re-roll any as necessary all other components however are limited to the quantities provided in the box and that's everything you need to know to play mansions of madness 2nd edition if you have any questions at all about anything that you saw here don't hesitate to put them in the comments below and I'll gladly answer them as soon as I get a chance but until the
30:31
next episode thanks for watching you
