BIODIVERSITY is the combination of two words that refer to the multiple and diverse forms of life on Earth. BIODIVERSITY describes the variety of plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms as well as the genetic differences that yield different traits within these species. BIODIVERSITY also refers to the way in which species interact with each other, with air, water, and soil that surrounds them. These interactions are known as ECOSYSTEMS. Several factors explain the diversity of ecosystems. Among them is the access to solar energy. This is why the Poles are not as biodiverse as the Tropics. Even though Colombia is not the biggest country in the planet, it is located in the Tropic, right on the Equator characterized by an elevated and abrupt terrain, rich in different climates where diverse organisms and ecosystems thrive. Because of this, a small portion of the world is one of the richest in biodiversity. Fourth in mammals. Third in reptiles. Second in amphibians, butterflies and plants. And first in birds and orchids.
Colombia is a MEGA-DIVERSE country. This diversity also has offered countless benefits to our daily life. Like pure air and fertile soil. It is our source of nourishment and it embeds our culture. BIODIVERSITY is present in everything. Our gastronomy, our clothing, the core of our traditions and our DNA. Every detail of our daily lives is marked by a complex system of relations that bind us with plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms. We need each other to preserve our identity, to improve our lives, and above all to continue existing.
