hi this is justice in this tutorial we're going to be talking about the watercolor brush and there's a lot of different settings here and so i'm going to go through a couple of the big ones first and then trickle through to the smaller ones this is the canvas that we worked on in the oil brush video if you haven't seen that check that out and what i wanted to show first is how oil colors interact with texture and i want to do this because it's really cool and it's probably the funnest thing to see as far as i'm concerned
00:35
so first thing we're going to do is we're going to take a very wet watercolor brush and we're going to paint right here and we're going to turn tilt on we want to make sure we've got a lot of wet paint here and we're going to turn on tilt and what you're going to see i have texture influence set very high and so these ridges from the oil paint are going to control where this
01:04
wet media moves how it's going to affect how this diffuses on the screen now let's go ahead and let's add a little bit more paint here because i like i like seeing how this works now re-wet is going to affect how much paint is pulled up when we add water so i'll demonstrate that in a second look at that spill right over the edge and just amazing how accurate and beautiful the physics and herbal four are really
01:45
it just it makes me smile i love seeing this this is what i dreamt digital art would be like in the future and we are here all right so let's demonstrate we're going to demonstrate re-wet and you'll see this is going to pull some of that oil paint up you're going to see some of the white canvas underneath it almost makes it like a little bit like acid so it's going to eat away the paint underneath you can get some really great great effects this way let's turn that down let's turn on
02:19
create drips you can see how this starts to behave a little differently and let's use the blow tool will inspire some dripping here let's see one little drip going right there let's add some more watercolor paint and let's do it right here and we'll use the blow tool again you can see those drips happening right away and let's dry this section here
02:55
because that is going to affect where some of this paint goes and i want you to see all these different behaviors so here's our dry section again you can see that with h for showing the wet you can see the drips we've shown how re-wet affects this area of the canvas absorbency okay so we're going to turn absorbency really high and we are going to wet the entire layer so everything is wet now you see that starting to play a role here absorbency
03:29
let's turn off now we can leave it on so where we put that paint down here in the beginning you can see is it's getting absorbed into the canvas and let's turn this really low and we're going to go right here and what you'll see difference the absorbency is is this is going to just run off of the area we put it with very little absorbency into the paper so
04:02
there is some really great great tools that we have for watercolor in rebel 4. let's go ahead and demonstrate edge darkening so i have edge darkening set to 10 and draw a little circle here and make sure that we have tilt turned on to see that little faint dark edge right on the border of the paint and let's let that go just a little bit longer i think you can see that pretty clearly let's turn edge
04:39
darkening to zero and do the same thing and you notice right away these top edges that are dark on this one with edge darkening turned on are very clear the waters just run right off of that the paint has run off of that it's all dripping down and none of it's going to the edges i really like this look i think it's really cool all right let's go ahead and we're going to turn off this layer and we're going to look at the infamous grid it is back my grid making abilities
05:17
okay so we're going to look at opacity water and pressure these are the volumes over here for watercolor so let's go ahead and go up here and let's look at water so here you can see the very top this one right here opacity water and pressure all of these are the same and what i mean the same is all of them have the opacity water and pressure turned to a hundred percent this is a hundred percent for everything this is fifty percent for everything twenty five
05:48
percent for all of these volumes and ten percent for all these volumes very very faint so here opacity is set at 100 and everything else is set at 100 here opacity is set at 50 and water and pressure are set at 100 25 for opacity 10 for opacity and the same thing here so you can see how the extra water here the 100 50 25 and 10 percent water same thing with
06:19
pressure and you're getting these different effects here you can see with the opacity you're still getting some of this texture and canvas pulling through here there's more color more darkness in the in the valleys of the canvas texture all right let's go ahead and look at diffusion so watercolor behaves
06:49
in a very different way whether you're putting wet paint or wet media onto a dry canvas if you're putting wet media onto a wet canvas and if you're putting dry media onto a wet canvas now dry this one is a hundred percent dry so the water is set at one so dry and this is a hundred percent wet i painted this background with wetness set to fifty percent wetness set to
07:22
twenty five percent wetness set to ten percent on the background the green portion of this and then i did a dry brush over the top and you can see how that affected the paint here wetness so this is 100 wet so the background was done wet and then we put wetness over the top this is 100 wet red mark 100 or 50 with the red 25
07:53
the red was 25 percent wet over here and here the red watercolor paint was 10 wet on a fully wet background now here we have wet on dry and wetness of the red was 100 50 wet 25 and 10 wet so there's a couple different ways that this can combine is a little bit confusing but this graph should help
08:24
explain it a little bit so take your time look at this and just play around a whole bunch and there's not a lot that's not enjoyable about playing around with the watercolors and seeing them diffuse on the screen and as you understand this better it's really going to help you control the paint that you're putting on the canvas and and control how all of that diffusion works okay so let's go ahead and look at the next one so looking at the overlay modes watercolor has a extra property here and
08:56
oils this is where we keep the dirty brush mode right here is transparent semi opaque and opaque so let's go up here and turn overlay modes on so you can see so when we have an opaque when we have an opaque stroke over the top of a color it's going to cover over it when we have a transparent overlay mode right here this is going to kind of do
09:27
similar to a multiplying effect the red and the green are going to combine in a very different way than right here now those two transparent and opaque have these very clear behaviors semi-opaque is a little bit different so when semi-opaque when the opacity is set let's go ahead and set this to semi-opaque when the opacity is set higher it'll behave just like the opaque it's going to cover over
09:57
as we decrease to 50 semi-opaque is going to behave a lot more like the transparent so this is a hybrid mode that gives you the ability using the control key to adjust your opacity level you can very quickly transition between this multiplying overlay mode or this opaque overlay mode and here again this is just the same process here we have the opaque colors going over and you can see
10:28
50 opacity 25 opacity 10 opacity let's take a quick look at some of the different watercolor brushes that are provided in rebel 4 so let's create a new layer and let's hide my beautiful grid and let's set these a little bit more to a natural place and bring up this so watercolors you have liners round and scratchy where we're seeing a
11:00
lot of texture in the background opaque i'm sorry transparent transparent brushes you can see i've got the tilt up fairly high so if there's a lot of water in it you're going to see this effect here if we turn this or remove this we can move this in real time and it'll affect where the water is dripping flat dry our bristly watercolor brushes and let's pick a couple additional
11:36
colors just because it's pretty okay and we have gouache let's bring the opacity up actually so you can see these a little bit clearer and all of these look very different i demonstrated this in the oil brush video if we change the background here it's going to drastically change you can see these ones dried with the canvas these ones dried with the mulberry paper it is a very very different look
12:22
so there are canvases papers for sale and there's free papers here at this link so click on that and see if you can find something that you really really identify with something you really like let's go ahead and put this back let's put it to a i i am a fan of the washi papers so let's click on this it's just very delicate yeah just beautiful all right here you can see some more
13:03
of the different brushes that are available some splatter brushes and these ones you can turn into an eraser you can make them so they're just water you can choose water and choose some of these here and then as soon as we jump back you're going to see how that kind of eats so it kind of like salt really cool and the star let's go ahead and put that as painting we'll see it diffuse and kind of pulls out pushes out again
13:48
these behave different depending on whether the canvas is wet or dry whether you have edge darkening on drips all of it will play a big role in the effects that you can get beautiful beautiful watercolors in rebel 4. all right if you have questions put it in the comment section below if you have not subscribed this is a great channel to subscribe to all right i'll see you in the next video thank you for watching
