hello guys and welcome to episode 55 of the 10 minute modeling challenge my name is stefan paschen also known as infensia and funny enough we're actually touching the third year of the 10 minute modeling challenge now because it started on the 30th of december of 2019 so theoretically well not just theoretically we ran it in 2019 even though it was just a little bit 2020 all of that one and we're in 2021 now we'll see i'm not quite sure how long i'm gonna be running this for i haven't committed to the whole year by any means that was uh my goal was to do
00:31
last year and we know how last year went but uh i'm gonna be doing them anyway and i'm gonna be doing thursday videos anyway so that's the whole plan for this year i haven't put a funny voice thing on either my throat is a little bit sore so if i sound like a radio speaker right now it's probably not because my voice has improved it's actually worse let's work through it shall we i don't know if you missed it but we've got a discord challenge going on in the infensia discord challenge check out the link in the description and head over there if you haven't been there already because we've got a discord challenge going on and it's a low poly modeling challenge
01:03
and every month we're going to be announcing a new theme and for this theme well for this year for this month it's a city block so 100 by 100 meters and we've already got some submissions going and a lot of discussions in the channel and we saw a whole surge of new members coming into the discord so that was a lot of fun welcome guys and i hope you enjoyed the challenge and if you're thinking about participating you should participate just head in there join the discord and start modeling since this is going on in the discord server
01:33
right now i'm going to be doing uh not a full block i wouldn't have time for that in 10 minutes even though i'd like to try i don't think i'd manage but i'm gonna do one building anyway and maybe that could provide some tips for someone but as far as i've seen so far a few of you are actually creating stuff a lot better than i am so so that's a lot of fun to see let's actually check out the discord now shall we and see what's going on in the discord when you join it check out this section here low poly challenge and we've got this monthly challenge you see the instructions here follow those that'll help you out a lot and that'll help me out a lot because i'm going to
02:05
be taking all the city blocks and hopefully assembling them into one massive city in the end so that's why i need your city as well but make sure you check out the rules and that you're okay with those first of all we've got some guides here as well one dead doc did an amazing job setting this up and all my admins in the discord are doing an amazing job so thanks a lot guys for helping me out it's a really lifesaver because you're a lot better at discord than i am i barely know how to show up so let's look in the submission section you know what we've got so far so this was a penguin submitted his first one already uh here's uh not sure
02:36
if uh what height this is we have to check with the roads later on uh but it seems quite well protected if it's some sort of uh is that like a castle wall maybe seems protected anyway it contains the water anyway that's good then we've got uh some rules there oh here we go it looks like a hospital nice job i like it i like it the building a lot it looks really authentic uh it looks like a real building low poly style i like it and all the trucks here and the rain roofs that they've got should i know exactly what this is i mean it could be a hospital it could
03:07
be a post office with lower post trucks it could be a massive ice cream delivery place but sorry about this i should know what it is a rule you've submitted an atm machine and even though it's a really cool atm machine i think you have to go back and check out the rules check in the guidelines here and in the monthly challenge because it's meant to be a city block and i don't think this atm is 100 by 100 meters and if it is it's going to be a very huge one so uh if you could please uh model a city block you can still use this atm machine and put it in show your
03:37
creations instead and then uh put a city block here if you could but good job i like the atm machine very good mike it's like mikel in swedish and you've created a cool mansion that's going to fit right in to a city block i think maybe on the outskirts or maybe it's a rich manure no maybe it's a rich mansion owner so he's got like a central city block so i love the roof i love i love the windows i like the entrance i like the trees i like this uh is this like where the servants live are you even allowed to say stuff like that these days i'm not sure
04:08
but it could be uh it's the gardener's house isn't it and then we've got swings here awesome little loose toes in swedish i have no idea what that's called in english lost house maybe probably not all right swedish flag as well cool like it nice job mikael right we've got hashem here as well and you've created it looks like a hotel in dubai nearly that it looks like a sail and i like the architecture a lot really cool a little roundabout here some nice trees a bit of an island here
04:39
as well i like it but i'm not quite sure it's following the rules of the city block can i put this in the city and if you want to tweak it and resubmit to make sure it does fit in the template that'd be great and if not it's a really cool model anyway all right monster you've created a really tall skyscraper here and i love the design it look looks really cool with the windows and this antenna thing at the top i love the water down here and it looks even that maybe i'm not seeing it properly but it looks like there's water on top here and if it is that's awesome it's like
05:10
like swimming pools on top and trees this is uh and i believe you also yeah 262 meters high and so you're stuck within the limit as well really nice job like it in the submission here as well we can scroll through you can see people are creating some really cool stuff here uh sean young i don't know if i'm saying your name right but i love this one really nice job this looks amazing very detailed i'll be curious to see how many polys that is i gotta say roofs are a pain if you want to be precise yeah yeah they can be a bit tricky seems pretty solid here waterproof so that's good donkey kong you're asking
05:41
yeah you can put roads here as well if you want you can split the block and put your roads there all right we've got alec i guess it is alec nice architecture here lovely window work and this entrance really nice i'm not going to be able to do anything like this in my 10 minutes let's put it that way and yeah in my sample scene i actually dropped it down a few levels and uh i think that's okay so if it's in the example scene i guess you should be all right to do it as well grindel khan is creating some really cool stuff here as well it looks a bit is it gothic that style i'm not quite sure i don't know my my architectural styles but i like that
06:13
a lot nice work wrecked it looks like you're nailing this one i love this design i i'm excited to see it from the side i'm not quite sure what it is but it looks really really cool design i like it good job rect i'm not going to say your full name because i learned my lesson during the 24 hour stream wow satchmo 1991 this is a really cool design i like it totally different from anything i've seen so i like that one oh you've created more cars i saw these earlier actually i love these i think is this a remake of the one i did for
06:44
the tutorial have you recolored or is that your version of it i'm not sure but you've created a whole bunch of extra cars here and i'm liking it liking what i see wolfer nice we've got uh i like the window work here as well it's quite tricky to do the windows so i like this uh big thing coming in on the side here a lot of light coming in there keep up the great job guys keep doing your city blocks keep modeling keep the discussion flowing and uh send in your submissions the deadline is on thursday the 28th of uh january so you've got plenty of
07:14
time still to do your modelling right after seeing all those cool swan i'm gonna actually kind of i'm gonna try to do a building now i don't know if i'll succeed or not but let's uh i've had popcorn before i don't know i watched uh an episode of ray donovan and then i had popcorn so i might have popcorn all over my top still all right so i'm going to model a building as well maybe a few of you could find some tips and tricks from this one and then just outshine me like you are already doing in the discord server and i'm just going to wing it i'll just create some weird building here i'm using the template by the way that's included in the challenge
07:44
so just to give you a little bit of a tip of how you could work with the template if you're going to start with this one which you have to do if you're going to participate in the challenge let's get modeling ready steady go and we're off yes tab into edit mode shift d to duplicate this face s to scale it down let's bring it down all the way to there put on the corner here i'm only going to be able to make one building so maybe a little bit wider and then e to extrude middle mouse button to make sure that it slides on that axis bring that one in and then i'm going to extrude it one
08:16
more time middle mouse button and here we go maybe that should be all right and grab these l to select the linked e to extrude 3.5 meters i'll do i think that's what i said usually that residential houses are let's put g here and make this one white make a white building and here should we do i'll just keep extruding this one actually e to extrude i'm going to do zero point maybe f two and then e to extrude three point
08:47
five and i'm gonna do this a few times i think because i want a little extra line there e 0.2 e 3.5 e 0.2 e 3.5 that's it and then here i think i'll do i'll leave that one for that many stories how many that is e to extrude 0.2 e 0 no 3.5 i'll explain why in a second e 0.2 e 3.5 e 0.2
09:18
e 3.5 why do i say every time i should just be quiet e to extrude 0.2 e 3.5 e 0.2 e 3.5 maybe that's high enough yeah i think that's good enough all right the reason why i did that is because i wanted to have control r so when i do insetting now i need a little extra space there especially if i'm going to do corners because if i'm going to make like a nice corner one here i'm going to select these faces
09:48
and i'm gonna do eye to inset and i wanted them to inset like this otherwise they would have all done it together and if i do for individual i didn't want to do that because i want them to wrap around the corner so all of that worked just for this let's make some windows like this and then i'll do alt e to extrude long face normals and then bring those in there's going to be some sort of a design feature there g blue blue windows always looks pretty good i think all right and for here i'm gonna do
10:20
some control r and then we'll do some windows here i think i to inset and then i'll do comma and then normal because now i can scale on the y axis that works on the diagonal there then so these are going to be some like a stair case house or whatever you call it a stairwell stair e to extrude g move it to there right and here ctrl r let's just do a number of loop cuts maybe like this and then just to break up the design
10:51
maybe i'll do every other like this how am i doing seven minutes i'm not going to do the bottom floor or should i shouldn't have done that for the bottom floor yeah i should have they can have it too itin sets but i'll do it oh yeah i tin set i think just once and then scale zed okay now i have to go back to medium point and global scale zed okay individual scale set that's it
11:22
and then we'll do windows here so i to inset again and then e to extrude in i'll do i again but i'll do it twice so i get individual and then e to extrude that in okay and then i'll do ctrl plus a few times because then i can color these window frames let's make it wood looking control minus two times and then just do the windows back to blue there we go all right here at the top i've got six minutes to go time's flying really let's make some
11:54
sort of a terrace thing here e takes through that one and then i to inset okay iten set but i have to do i again so i get this individual i and then shift d i'll just duplicate this one create some weird fancy thing here 3.5 i want to do again let's pick this one bring it up maybe colorize this in a different color here we'll do itunes set e to extrude and then blue time flies actually
12:26
i i'm noticing i've done this 55 episodes now you would've thought i'd be used to it by now but here we'll do some sort of a terrace maybe iten set e to extrude just a little bit or 0.8 actually i think that's the height i'll do up first okay i can do that it iten set e to extrude minus 0.8 that's like a fence then that's only 0.8 meters high but that's okay and then put wood there right ctrl r i have to put some more windows here now it looks a bit dull so let's do some weird design here as well
12:57
i'm just going to go around actually and do should we do like this maybe for some reason i want some asymmetric [Music] look on the floors here i have no idea why or do i apparently i do but i'll do it like this instead no i can't decide okay let's do it like this that's some utility floor of some sort i just don't want everything to look the same so eye to inset scale zed alt e
13:31
extreme long face normals into there and then here i think i'll do i to inset the let's see ah i did it wrong here i have to redo can't remember the shortcut item set item set again for the individual all the extreme long face normals just slightly control plus make it wood control minus twice and then blue here and then here i'll do the same here i think i'll do some sort of a terrace here item set
14:02
twice e to extrude maybe down to there make it brown and oh my god time is flying so much items that even more than normal and time will have a tendency to fly a lot anyway especially when you're having fun which we're having right so g to move it more wood all right here i'm going to do some i guess this is could be like a garage entrance here so i think set this one e to extrude it g to move that one to
14:33
black so it just looks like and then here i'll just do it darker gray i think all right we can do something similar here maybe we'll do item set i'll do like a door entrance thing here light inset scale y e to extrude it inside i'll just do some weird features here i'll have to wing it time's flying too fast so i have to do the back a little bit as well maybe we can do i'll just do c to circle select the whole bunch there
15:06
middle mouse button to deselect e to extrude this could be some like as well some i don't know like storage maybe maybe we'll slant that for some different okay i have to oh time is going way too fast i'll control r a few times here about to put some more windows so i'll just have to randomly select a few things here now i'll stick with the asymmetric look here again just to break it up i don't know why i have no idea what to do i'm this is why i'm not an architect
15:36
by the way here we go and there we go and just here that can be a special floor there as well item set of course and then alt extreme long face normals into their i to inset twice remember so we got the individual e to extrude all t to extrude on face normals there we go control plus three times make these wood again
16:09
and control minus two times g and that's it all right that's it and here we okay i've got one minute 39 we can put some more windows so this is why i've got that line in between there because now i i can do individual or non-individual and get away with it item set twice actually i wanted to flatten these first item set scale zed item set again
16:42
twice so i get no at first i want to i don't know what i'm doing anymore eat all t to extrude in item set item set again for the individual all d extrude long normals control plus and we've got one minute to go wood there as well control minus on the keypad remember so we get there that's it okay here we go uh should we do some more what's happened here we've got a serious issue i managed to extrude the door way wrong
17:12
let's just hide it okay i got away with it i think so i'm going to put some ceiling or rooftop in here item set twice e to extrude control plus let's just make that black of some sort we have to have some air con units here it's going to have to be here on this i'm afraid so whoever gets this terrace is gonna have to live with some air con boxes here shifty always looks a bit more realistic if you've got some stuff on the roof here i think
17:42
i think i think it does all right i need to extrude this little thing here so no extrude i need to scale it five seconds to go all right do you know what i'm gonna end [Music] it all right guys here we go i i don't know if this looks like a a residential building it from here it looks like a residential building from here it looks like a hospital again maybe i was inspired by the hospital that we just saw
18:17
but that's an example anyway have uh maybe this 10 minute modeling challenge could help you a little bit in participating in the challenge all you need to do a lot is extrude a lot a lot of inset not so much scaling this one so a lot of insetting and alt e to extrude long face normals and when i extrude along the face normals here you might someone with a keen eye might have noticed that it's actually not extruding it uniformed in here i sort of thought it gave it a bit of a cool look but if you wanted to fix this the bonus
18:48
tip this week i haven't said that in a long time but the bonus tip this week is if i go here do the little drop down and do vertex make sure that it's on vertex there because now if i select two to go here select this edge here check out this magic most of you know this maybe but if you don't check this out you start moving it on the y-axis by dragging it on this arrow hold the ctrl key and then move it to this vertex pow and that's it it's aligned and you could do the same here for the
19:18
for this axis here as well so if you move it on this one on the red one hold the ctrl key and then bow move it to there and now this ledge here is the same so basically that's snapping the vertex to another vertex and on a specific axis and you could do that for all of these if you wanted to but i actually liked that little weird look that it's not uniform so another little trick i want to show you that you might be able to use in this challenge as well is when you have something like this and since we're using the gradient texture here check this out
19:50
you could if i go to face select here and then i hold let's just make sure i double click a make sure i've got nothing selected alt select on click on this edge here now and it loops select in here and now you can do seven on the keypad and you won't see much here but if i go to uv now and then i do since i've just got those ones selected we go project from view now you see that these uh uv's here it look really weird here with the colors but if we move them g to move them up
20:21
here and then s to scale them r to rotate hold the ctrl key to snap rotate and that was the wrong direction so i'll do it the other way here there check this out scale and then you can scale them on the y axis as well like this g and then you're actually getting the gradient here for these faces you can see that they're stretching across this gradient now so you can actually it's nearly like ambient occlusion effect and you can use that for any indentation you could use it up here for example if
20:52
you wanted to make it a little bit darker as it goes in maybe we even wanted to move it to a darker we can bring it over here let's see what that looks like yeah that's pretty good so a little fake shadow effect there maybe that could be of use as well i've got a tip as well for you if you're struggling a little bit with a design go out for a walk i did that today i uh in the evening actually it's about 2 43 in the morning now but earlier in the evening i felt a bit sluggish if that's a word i felt a bit tired so i sat on the couch watching youtube
21:22
so i decided to go for a walk for about an hour so i went past it was pitch black outside it started to snow which was pretty nice i realized why i don't want to have a boat because uh i'd be one of these guys leaving it in the winter so it'll freeze probably and break but it was a nice walk and they even have the christmas lights up and i decided to actually walk up to a tree that has quite a lot of christmas lights and i've always seen it from a distance but i decided to walk up to it and look pretty cool when you get up close to it as well and it actually helped my mind a little bit a lot and it actually helped my mind a little bit a lot a little bit a lot
21:52
a little bit a lot to just clear things out i could think a little bit about youtube about the game that i'm making about the new year about my family about my wife about the house about making just about everything so clear your mind go for a walk it's really good hit the like button if you liked the video and subscribe if you haven't already and head over to the patreon page as well if you want to give that a little bit of extra support it's at patreon.com and i'll see you next week for another video and i might even see you in between there as well got some more
22:20
videos coming you
