a while back i was having a conversation with a teenager in a public setting and he was telling me that he had been learning how to play chess at school and so i just asked a simple question i asked you know what kind of strategies are you learning so that you can be really good at chess because i think that's a pretty complicated mind game and it's it's fascinating and he made a simple comment he said well i've learned that if you can kill the queen then you're you're going to have a good chance to win and i just simply said oh you mean to
01:05
capture the queen and he looked at me and just said kill and kind of caught me off guards like whoa where did the kid learn to think that way and of course i learned that he had some many many other influences in his life that were not good and healthy you know we live in a culture where those kinds of themes and that kind of thinking has become more and more embedded in the minds of many now this was a young and immature and impressionable kind of young man and i'm
01:37
sure that he's been exposed to all sorts of themes that would take him down that path that he was going but i want us to take a look today at some of the entertainment themes that we have in our culture that scream narcissism i mean for crying out loud here this kid had a board game and he was turning it into a killing field literally and and i want us to see that we have uh been actually lulled into a place of complacency or indifference regarding the themes that are depicted
02:08
now i want to run through multiple uh uh elements in our entertainment industry that can take us down a path toward narcissism without us necessarily bothering to think about it and i want you to think about how this can have an impact on your world now the first thing i'm going to focus on here today is uh the the movies that we have the movies and television series that are streamed that depict violent and gruesome themes do you ever slow down enough to think what is this saying about us as a
02:40
culture you know you have what i call sometimes the good sociopaths who are gonna get out there and kill the bad sociopaths and we can have it in the name of you know the uh the the spy people who are trying to kill the people that are trying to ruin the world or you have these people that are destructing they're gonna destroy the earth and so we have these avengers that come around and they're gonna just blow up the ones that are going to blow us up and there's so much wanton killing and death and violence and gruesome scenes
03:10
and many individuals will say oh that's cool that's neat and i'm thinking i think it's it's sad when i when i see some things where these people are dying and killed being killed as collateral damage i'm wondering who's going to go to that person's family member's house knock on the door and say ma'am i hate to tell you but your son was killed in this uh scenario here uh we have bad news for you when i say something like that people look at me like carter what's wrong with you it's just a movie i think
03:40
well that's how my brain operates i'm not able to look at those kind of things without thinking about the deeper meaning of it but like i say we get lulled into a sense of complacency about it we just say it's just part of the entertainment scene no it actually feeds this notion of dominance and overpowering other individuals those are prime ingredients in narcissism or another uh entertainment theme that screams narcissism uh and again to me this is low-lying fruit uh think about
04:12
some of the video games that feature killing themes and we used to talk about the video games as uh with respect to the impact that it would have on pre-teens and teenagers and certainly they have impressionable minds but i've talked also with people in their 20s and 30s and 40s deep into their adult years uh middle-aged years where they're in these groups where they have this competition who can do the sniper thing and kill people off and pick them out or who can go through all
04:43
of these different mazes and kill people who are trying to stop them in whatever their goal would be there and the more you have exposure to that and there are people who are just completely caught up in it in an ongoing thing that's a huge part of their social connections that's a huge part of their entertainment again it it's part of that desensitization of of us being concerned about the dignity of another human being and it's part of that that culture that says i don't care what happens people i hope i wipe them out
05:14
or how about a third theme that we have have any of you ever been exposed to some of this cage fighting and the so-called wrestling that we have i'll see commercials on television where you have these really mean and i'm talking about nasty looking kind of people who are just out there thinking put someone in front of me and i'll just rip them to shreds and uh yeah and they have all of this uh these themes of beating someone else up in brutality and uh you know
05:45
sometimes some of these the the number one rule that they have is you can't gouge out someone's eyes so that's a nice rule isn't it uh and then i look and see there are huge throngs of people who are following this and large numbers on tv and people making a lot of money doing something like that i'm thinking that's what the gladiators did and it didn't end well for anyone and where is this taking our culture when we have this cage fighting mentality and this brutality and we cheer them on like go get them i want
06:16
you to just destroy this other one i find that to be terribly sad and it's highly narcissistic or how about a fourth thing this is shifting gears a little bit a fourth theme that we have in our entertainment and that is the the pervasiveness of pornography there are all sorts of studies that show how men in particular are vulnerable to being attracted to pornography on an ongoing basis and in doing so we know that it's directly linked to the objectification
06:47
of women or subjugation of women they're there to meet a man's jollies and there are studies that show that the the heavier the use of pornography the more a person has inclination towards things like domestic violence and things of that nature and again we can i i'm all for having healthy sexual relationships in the proper context but we're not talking about that here we're talking about desensitizing your feelings towards uh a women or a scene that would be something
07:20
that would be very very tender and loving and caring and just turning it into a an entitled mindset how can i use this person in such a way that's going to make me feel better in my today that's a theme that can scream narcissism or shifting gears to another one what about gambling uh you you there are many casinos now out there and you know people can go and try to and have some fun at those kind of places i know they often have concerts and things like that at some of
07:50
the casinos and somebody might have fun at the blackjack table but i'm talking about some people that get so deep into gambling and the the things that are associated with that that it destroys them and it becomes an addiction uh i remember talking with one guy who had gone to a weekend at a casino and i asked him how did he do and he said well let me put it to you this way they gave me a free room and what he meant was i was losing so much money they wanted me to stay around for another day and and i've known people who have
08:21
literally uh ruined their financial status with a lifelong savings or they get in trouble with the irs or monthly bills because uh whether it's online gambling or casinos or wherever it just it encourages a person to go into greed and instant gratification again those are elements that are a part of narcissism or how about a final theme that we can have and this is one where most of us can relate to and that is any sports
08:52
activity that leads to a i hate the opponent mindset how many of you have been around whether we're talking about little leagues uh or in high school or in professional college and professional where there's just so much anger that's there you'll kill the empire or i've talked with people who have been in uh sports places where they were in a parking lot and they were spit upon by members who are people who were pulling for the opposite team what's going on here
09:24
and i look at these different kind of themes that i'm mentioning and then i go back to that conversation with that teenage boy and i realized you know uh there there is a culture here of entertainment that is not healthy and it feeds this mindset that leads straight into narcissism now my question is i want us to just kind of pull back and get a little philosophical and ask that age-old question and that is why are we here and when i say here i mean on earth
09:56
it is our purpose on earth to find ways to dominate one another to offer humiliation to another individual to exploit people for just short-term personal gain is our purpose degradation or just shallow meaningless engagement with one another is that what we're here for because that's what so much of these themes leads us to or are we here for kindness
10:27
helpfulness serving by one another friendliness love there are actually studies that show that those kind of ingredients uh make you a much healthier individual both physically and psychologically what are we putting into our minds and what what do we gravitate towards as we think in terms of keeping ourselves entertained and keeping ourselves stimulated i'm hoping that you can see that as we talk about surviving narcissism it means that we're very aware of some of
10:57
the things that can pull us away from our healthy self and take us into the themes of narcissism like control and exploitation and superiority no empathy and i'm hoping you can conclude with me we can do better and so let's recognize that these uh these things that i mentioned here are not uh simple kinds of things we can brush off and say oh no big deal it's a big deal and if enough of us can pull back and say i don't want to go in that direction then i'm hoping we can be
11:28

11:59
an online counseling service we have a link below that would take you to that there's a whole list of licensed professional counselors with experience that could assist you in that regard i've had good feedback from that and sometimes it's good to have somebody that'll help you unpack these kinds of things in addition we have my courses uh and and when i talk about courses they're not just one-off webinars although we have those too and i would encourage you to avail yourself to that but the courses feature multiple videos with written material and questions that go along with it kind of guiding you
12:29
through a therapeutic process this is me which talks about setting boundaries or free to be which talks about discovering yourself despite the controllers in your life and also we have my books and then other media places where we can be found plenty of resources below okay when we talk about entertainment it's kind of what you put in your mind is eventually going to come out in the way you live let's be careful about that because i want us to go back and say i want to be a giver and a a person that stands for drc dignity
13:01
respect and civility i hope that's something you can find yourself attracted to so that it's something that you're known for in the way that you engage with people [Music]
