now last time i was on the central line i looked at gantz hill the next station along is newbury park so it's only logical that i should skip that entirely and talk about barking side actually sarcasm aside i do have my reasons which i hope will become clear when i do the newbury park video so this is barkingside it's another station on the central line out in essex and to be honest it doesn't feel much like an underground station at all it feels like a station on a country branch line the sort of place that

flanders and swan might sing about there would be a porter leaning against a broom and having a nap two trains a day that sort of thing it has all sorts of facilities you wouldn't normally expect of an underground station like a car park toilets and a waiting room it even has old railway cottages built to house the workers the architecture feels to me at least rather arts and crafts yet any underground historian will tell you that this section of the central line was opened in 1948 so what gives well the clue is in this

ironwork the monogram reads g-e-r before this was the underground it was the great eastern railway who opened barking side station in 1903 they built this entire line as kind of a speculative thing the great eastern relied very heavily on commuter trains in fact commuter trains were one of the few really profitable ventures they had but they got greedy they built this line out into what was then the essex countryside the

thinking was that if they could provide a railway it would encourage housing developments and give them passengers if you build it they will come so to speak and hopefully they will come by train it wasn't a stupid idea it had worked elsewhere in london with other companies but this time somehow it just didn't poor old barking sides didn't become the commuter hub the great eastern hoped it would in fact passenger numbers were so low

that the station closed altogether for three years from may 1916 to june 1919. in 1923 the great eastern railway was swallowed up by the london and north eastern railway who couldn't get the line to pay its way either enter the london underground in 1935 the new works program was put forward now i have mentioned this before but to put it simply it was a huge modernization plan that was intended to totally revolutionize the underground as part of this it was proposed to

absorb the ferlop loop the line barking side is on into the central line the thinking was this the central line could give a far better service than the great eastern or the london and northeastern railways the great eastern line ran into liverpool street the central line could run right through london the great eastern could only offer old-fashioned steam hauled rolling stock the central line would run fast frequent electric trains in 1938 work started to turn this sleepy

branch line into the newest section of the underground things were put on hold due to the second world war but in 1947 steam trains ended and in 1948 barkingside became a de facto underground station these concrete lampposts and fences are obvious additions by london underground but otherwise modernisation has been fairly light at parking side in fact the station is grade 2 listed in recognition of its original features but even though it looks like a country
