00:31
there is a battle coming the war has already begun it is raged unseen for millennia and though we often struggle to see the conflict for what it really is all of us can feel its effects we wrestle with the powers of sin and death on a daily basis and sometimes in our darkest moments it can feel like we're losing but the word of the lord tells a different story hope echoes throughout the pages of scripture despite the mystery that surrounds it
01:02
the book of revelation offers the people of god a clear message fear not tomorrow tomorrow is one amen church my name is susie abraham it's so good to be here with you my family and i moved here in 2017 from new jersey and we have very much felt ingratiated into this church body um the past few years has given me a chance to serve in a few ways
01:32
with connections i also serve as a small group leader for women's bible study and on the worship team for recovery this morning scripture reading is from revelation chapter 1 verses 1 through 5. the revelation of jesus christ which god gave him to show his servants the things that must soon take place he made it known by sending his angel to his servant john who bore witness to the word of god and to the testimony of jesus christ
02:03
even to all that he saw blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is written in it for the time is near john to the seven churches that are in asia grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come and from the seven spirits who are before his throne and from jesus christ the faithful witness the firstborn of the dead and the ruler of kings on earth to him who loves us
02:34
and has freed us from our sins by his blood this is the word of the lord thanks be to god hey good morning if you have your bibles i do want you to turn there we are just going to look at those five verses i am incredibly excited to start uh this series in fact i've been nervous for myself uh and so glad to be diving in i've got a lot of questions about why we're doing revelation and why we're doing revelation uh right now and notice i'm not putting an s at the end of that word it's not revelations
03:07
it's revelation singular a single revelation uh and and it's it might not be why you think uh i have not watched the news or looked at the times and thought oh man we we need this book because we've needed this book for 2 000 years right it's not like all of a sudden revelation was given to us like oh now that it's really how let me give them this that's not why like i'm not preaching revelation for the next 12 weeks because i see something happening around us but rather i can see
03:38
in my heart i i've got in my guts a picture of where jesus is taking us and i want to invite you to come with me like when i in my mind's eye see what jesus is doing and the opportunities we have and this refrain that i've been telling you that we were built for a moment like this what i see is a family of faith that's a biblically serious family of faith they know the word of god they love the word of god they bleed the word of god when when when
04:09
the world squishes on them what comes out is scripture when they're eating a good meal they're grateful to jesus because they know they can drink orange juice to the glory of god when they get sick they know god is good and so they praise him even as they ask for their healing that everywhere they look stars food family they know the word of god they're strengthened by the word of god and it's what comes out of them most natural they're they're also people that are spiritually alive like they're awake to the things of god
04:40
they're living and vibrant not only do they know the word but they live the word because listen to me obedience is better than revelation did you hear me for everybody going i just want a word from god do what he's already told you to do and you're going to hear a lot more from him and i can see that coming for us yes have ears to hear the still small voice of the spirit but you're not going to hear it if you never do it like to know the word of god to walk in the word of god to pummel hell with prayers to heaven i want to be a
05:13
threat you tracking with me i want to be a threat and then to just be ignited with evangelistic zeal what would it be like for you to actually believe that jesus could save your neighbor not not like in like the ethereal yeah jesus saves his arms aren't too short not that like what would it be like for you to actually believe it and what if no one was safe what if no one was safe because there you are getting a cup of coffee how can i pray for you how are things going hey why don't you come let's sometime like like what would it be like to practice
05:44
radical hospitality as an assault on western ideology look i'm proud of my heritage i'm proud to be western there's a lot of benefits to being western uh but we have tall privacy fences in tiny dining room tables what would it be like to actually know your neighbors names what they're actually going through and love and serve and engage them not to get something from them but because christ has done that for you so like i i can see that and i can feel it and i feel good on the cusp and so i want us to get there i want to get and here's what i think is happening
06:16
even right now i think a lot of you are hearing me go that sounds good i mean that's i like that i'd like to go there and here's where i get concerned for us i think we might understand those words but not really understand the cost eugene peterson was preaching in tyler texas so out east behind the pine curtain don't know if you've been there beautiful scary but a wonderful place um he's preaching in tyler texas and he writes to his son eric this is a stunning quote and one that resonates not just with me but with others in our congregation
06:47
why am i so uncomfortable in this world this world being the bible belt they are all on my side they are all courteous and affirmative but it seems to be gospel without depth without suffering without ambiguity everything smoothed out and ironed and with a lot of starch in the collar when i've had good friends move here from seattle from new york from other parts of the world goodness sakes even family members that have come in from difficult places
07:22
around the world they they all feel like we're thin and we lack a kind of wartime mentality that owns the mission of god and actually lives it out they find jesus for us maybe to be important but still just kind of attached on to everything else where the bible knows nothing of jesus being attached to the bible knows jesus as life not one component of life he is life and where we get any sense of this at the village church thin gospel
07:53
no sacrifice no courage no great faith i want to drive it out pray it out claw out of it put it to death so that we might be a people right that are captivated by the beauty and glory of god and so revelation helps us and even as i was studying it frustrated me right because this book's been taken from us by bad teaching they they've created fear i'm 46 so i'm aging here like when i was a kid there were like all these do you remember like the old if you grew up in church like old videos
08:24
like frigging guillotine cutting people's heads off and like you know they're just terrible old movies if you got into the left behind series right like all these like you just get sucked in and you're like oh my gosh i'm so terrified of the future well revelation is a book of consummation it's a it's a book of comfort it's meant over two millennia to inject courage into the people of god not to rob them of courage uh cat out of the bag the locusts in revelation are not the apache helicopter this is for free the vaccine is not the
08:55
mark of the beast now feel whatever you want about the vaccine but if you're really worried about somebody tracking get rid of your phone i just can't believe the nonsense we're buying into like the government's gonna get us you're gonna get i like you i got a device on you all the time like this is about christian courage that's what this is about and that's what i want for us man i got 20 years left with you guys i have no i nothing in me wants to manage i want to fight i want to run i want to go and revelation
09:25
sets it up for us to step into it right it sets it up to step into it now here's what i want to do this is my plan for today i simply want to tell you what this book is so that you know what it's not okay it's three things according to our text let's look back at it revelation 1 1-5 if you're like is he always like this i mean it depends week to week but let's go the revelation of jesus christ which god gave him to show his servants
09:58
and the things that must soon take place he made it known by sending his angel to his servant john who bore witness to the word of god and to the testimony of jesus christ even to all that he saw blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is written in it for the time is near john to the seven churches that are in asia grace to you and peace from him who is
10:29
and who was and who is to come and from the seven spirits who are before his throne and from jesus christ the faithful witness the firstborn of the dead and the ruler of the kings on earth to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood the book of revelation is three things the first thing that it is it's a letter and you see this in revelation 1 4 john 2 i'm writing to john
11:00
to the seven churches in asia so first and foremost the book of revelation is a letter just like galatians is a letter just like first and second corinthians are a letter just like philippians is a letter and and what i mean by that is it is written to a specific people living in a specific time and a specific place so that revelation cannot mean to us what it did not mean to them revel i'm trying to help you know your bible it cannot mean to us what it did not
11:32
mean to them how individualistic are we when we approach our bible and how poorly do we read it constantly reading ourselves into the text this was written for us but not to us are you tracking with me this was written for us let me read it see your glory see your beauty understand and walk according to it but it's not written to us this is why i can happily say that the uh the locusts aren't the apache helicopter like how cruel would god be in the face of what this church is going these seven
12:02
churches are going through to go hey you know what in three thousand years it's going to be fine like like how cruel would that be how would that have brought any comfort at all to them oh great in 3 000 years it's going to be awesome now this is about courage and you don't get courage by going in 3000 years that's going to be fine right so it's a letter and and here's when it was written around 96 a.d at a time where it had been three decades of intense persecution if you did the act study in men's or women's bible study uh you
12:34
know that for an extended period of time there man the church was doing really well the over and over in the book of acts you'll say and the lord added to their number daily and you see these big kind of epic 5 000 people here 10 000 people here 8 000 people in the church are just booming right it was spreading paul was planting churches all over the ancient world and things were happening and then nero in 65 a.d launches the first wave of persecution against the christian church that wasn't that wasn't based on kind of the religious rulers in the fair sake and
13:05
sagittarius parties but but governmental persecution by the roman empire uh the church kind of clenched rallied prayed continued to serve the poor continue to walk in power continue to share the gospel in the hopes that that that nero's kind of regime of terror would give way and unfortunately it did to vespion in 67 he used christians as human torches he would dip them in oil and light them on fire they were imprisoned they were fed to animals they were brutalized and and this is in 2020 you were not persecuted
13:36
you had your preferences pressed on i'm not saying that's not significant i'm not saying you don't need to speak up about that what i'm saying is don't call it persecution right it's an assault on our preferences maybe even assault on liberty but but it is not persecution not not in any biblical sense of that world word i don't mean to agitate you all right so now they're hanging on okay maybe maybe when when vespian's out maybe it will get better and 70 a.d might have been the darkest year in christian history for followers of jesus christ it was in 70 a.d that jerusalem was
14:07
destroyed and burnt to the ground and on in that year of 70 a.d listen to this paul peter and timothy were all publicly executed those are some hitters in the first century church isn't it like what if right now after this over you pulled up your device and you're like oh my gosh governmental authorities just drug john piper out of his church and put a bullet in his head and tim keller and tony evans they pulled them all out in the street and they blew their brains out in front of everybody like that's what happened here
14:37
in one year and then like okay maybe it'll get better under the next guy but it doesn't in 92 domitian was made emperor and he ordered all the citizens of rome to worship him as god set up a temple in rome and if you had the means you were expected to travel to rome go into the mission's um temple pick up a pinch of incense and throw it on the fire and say caesar is lord when we say don't get political what do
15:09
you think's happening when the early church said jesus is lord you don't think that's kind of counter uh cultural you don't think they're standing in stark opposition in that moment the mission is like and then here's he set up a series of laws so most of those laws were around um the the persecution of christians one namely was that if any christian was brought under any charge in front of any tribunal that if that christian would not renounce his face that faith then they would they would suffer the far extent of whatever they were supposed to right
15:40
this is what the church is under and this is why when next week when we talk about the seven letters to the churches you understand why they're not doing so great i mean we would do great if we were in that guy we just had to wear masks and we'd lost our minds right we would crush this if we were back then we'd show rome what's up i've got doubts so revelation is being written to churches that are under immense persecution now the temptation let's just be human the
16:10
temptation to enjoy the pleasures of rome the peace of rome the roads of rome the wealth of rome the sensuality of rome the the press to enjoy that rather than sit under this kind of persecution had to be overwhelming and so as we walk through this book i want to continually point you back to this is their reality 30
16:41
years of being brutalized in ways that we have no imagination for we just can't imagine what this is like for a month and they're in it for 30 years which means most of the younger christians never knew anything different they just never knew anything different to be a christian was to put your life on the line to follow jesus is to remain poor forever to be locked out of the economic system to be hounded and marginalized and
17:14
misrepresented and lied and beaten with no recompense for those who beat you and maybe ultimately killed this is who revelation was written to but it's not just a letter it's also look at verse three it's also a prophecy that's what we see in revelation 1 3 the words of this prophecy now the heart of biblical prophecy as a genre is not so much something about the future but it's almost always about thus saith the lord so we read prophetic genres in scripture what we
17:44
need to take away is not that there's this thing that's going to happen in the future although that that certainly happens in the bible but but here in this genre what's happening is you're seeing thus says the lord not just in the future but now and and this is important for us to know this is a really important part of us studying this book together um we we are westerners which means we think linear this builds on this builds on this builds on this revelation cannot be read that way it is not linear at
18:14
all there there is a series of windows that we get to peer into and they're not in chronological order so if you remember when we did uh the book of exodus uh we had the like three or four minute bumper that would catch you up on where we are in the story or you can't do that with revelation because it's not linear it's like you get a picture here and then a picture over here and they might be 90 years apart they might not have enough and so what we need to do and here's the question the question as we study revelation as prophecy is not what happens next
18:45
but what does john see next all right it's not what happens next it's what does john see next so as you study this on your own because i'm just doing a 12-week survey as you study this on your own you need to pay very close attention to john saying i turned and saw or i heard those are windows being opened and pictures that god wants us to see as it was written for us and not to us let me give you an example of this this is revelation 12
19:17
1-4 and a great sign appeared in heaven a woman clothed with the sun with the moon under her feet and on her head a crown of twelve stars she was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth and another sign appeared in heaven behold a great red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and on his head seven diadems his tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven
19:48
and cast them to earth and the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth so when she bore her child he might devour it that's a wildly different christmas morning than you and i celebrate isn't it i mean we're like silent night holy night and revelation 14 90 years before this is written is saying no no there was a woman
20:18
crying out and a dragon waiting to devour and when you get to 14 when we get to 14 you'll you'll see and and and not only is that dragon ultimately destroyed as he pursues the offspring of the the woman but but that offspring is jesus but also his church that when all said and done the dragon gets slain and and this is this is 9 like this is 14 right so this chapter 14. you see what i mean by windows and not chronological linear storytelling this is what's true about biblical
20:50
prophecy it's it's odd it's different for us right it brings us to the last thing so so not only is it a letter to a specific people at a specific time in a specific place written to them but for us not only is it a prophetic book in a genre uh which means it's not linear it's a series of windows that we're going to appear into it's not in order we're going to look and see and then we're going to look and see and we're going to hear and then we're going to look and see and this is like the one we just read was window four so so like you can see it happened like
21:21
we're in revelation 12 and we're 90 years before revelation was written like the book starts revelation 1 revelation 2 into revelation 3 in the moment 96 a.d in the present and then somehow by chapter 12 we go 90 years before right it's a wild way uh to consider and think about what we're reading it's not what happens next it's what does john see next that becomes important so it's a letter
21:52
it's a prophecy and it's an apocalypse revelation 1 1 says that this is a revelation that that word revelation in the greek is apocalypse it simply means unveiling or disclosure so the purpose of the book of revelation is to unveil to the churches in asia and to us that things are not what they seem or at least they are more than they seem so so here's apocalyptic literature in particular tries to do certain things that are
22:24
strange for us we're not an image heavy people in regards to how we learn we're a fact heavy people in regards to how we learn which is why this stuff wigs us out and why we can watch cheesy movies on it be convinced that that's what the bible's saying people are often represented in the likeness of animals in apocalyptic literature historical events are represented in the form of natural phenomenon like earthquakes or floods colors and numbers have meanings
22:55
this means revelation like ezekiel like daniel as well as parts of isaiah zechariah and joel are full of imagery that's meant to not just inform our minds but to ignite our spirits as our mind is more informed um and if you're like why okay great why not just come out and say it man why not just go look a woman gave birth to jesus he built a church and they're gonna kick the trash out of the devil i could get that i'd read that well again there's something imagery does to us as human beings because of how
23:26
we're designed that's needed and necessary for ultimate victory to be had by us um let me give you this quote this by daryl johnson not the fullback for the cowboys i'm sure he's great i'm just not sure he's thought this deeply about revelation but this is daryl johnson just commend his book discipleship on the edge to you it's a great book that a group of us read as we were prepping for this series here's a quote imagery has the power to hook us deep inside images can quickly and effectively
23:57
convey that which we struggle to put into words imagery goes beyond the intellect and through the emotions into the imagination grabbing hold of us at the deepest recesses of our being imagery goes beyond the intellect and through the emotions into the imagination in turn that informs the intellect and ignites the emotion so so let's let's just do it with what we've already if you find like if you find your heart beating stir what stirs up your heart to be in the
24:27
game more mary heard from an angel that the holy spirit would come upon her she'd be great with child she'd give birth to that child jesus was born in a stable in bethlehem they traveled no no place for them sleep end up in a manger and some shepherds came and they worshiped him let's sing or and there was a great war in heaven and the dragon awaited to devour the woman and devour her offspring
24:59
and to make war against the lamb and his people but god protected the lamb protected his people drove the beast into the wilderness until the people of god conquered so so like one swede i appreciate it we're going to continue to light candles at christmas eve we're not going to shift what we're doing on christmas eve we'll be a dragon on the stage and i'll come out dragging a bloody sword and you know i'm not talk but but these images tell me they don't provoke you like this kind of imagery provokes the
25:35
human spirit like it makes me want to punch something in the face i know i'm broken like it makes me want to fight oh there's a dragon trying to destroy my family trying to kill my kids trying to wage war against my king let's go like imagery does that in a way that lighting a candle and singing silent night probably doesn't this is why apocalyptic literature is so powerful it provokes the spirit at the deepest place informs our intellect and charges our emotions rightly so we're not
26:06
driven by our emotions we're driven by what is true but it's truth in a way that gets hold of our guts or as daryl says it hooks us at the deepest possible place in our being and we haven't learned to learn that way have we just give me the facts but they're both facts aren't they mary did give birth into a manger silent night and there was war in heaven at the same
26:40
time and the war wages on we find ourselves in the story even today we also see that apocalyptic literature it's trying to do two things there are two things that it wants to do it seeks to set the present right now you and it seeks to set us anchor us in our present by giving us a picture of the unseen realities of the future right so we're anchored in the present here's we're 20 21 we didn't choose the days in which we would live god chose the days in which we were live here we are this time
27:11
this moment in history in this place dallas texas we didn't choose that we were born into it but what apocalyptic literature wants to do is yeah and as you're there this is what i'm going to be doing it doesn't just want to set or anchor our present reality in the unseen realities of the future it also wants to set our anchor set our present reality in the unseen realities of the present
27:47
i i can feel an increasing burden for a lack of spiritual understanding about what's going on behind everything and i just keep telling you the reason we're just getting our tail handed to us in the world it's not because we don't have enough bibles or correct versions of the bible or because somebody lands in a different place on a secondary issue than we do there is a very real enemy constantly trying to destroy us constantly trying to distract
28:18
us constantly trying to deceive us constantly trying to cost us hope and joy in jesus and if you've got no idea that's happening then you're gonna ascribe your enemy to somebody you shouldn't describe your aim like think in this environment how easy it would have been for the first century church to hate the romans but don't the romans become the primary men and women who begin to follow jesus as christianity spreads across the ancient world see if everybody's our enemy and there's
28:48
not an actual enemy behind everything then then we will hate we will be unable to love if people are captured or they're in bondage they were able to love and care and sincerely have compassion for the state of their souls which was our state before christ saved us if you have no understanding of spiritual dynamics and you want to kind of boil it all down into linear facts and and not lose the imagery and just try to be moral people you are going to get
29:19
your teeth kicked in and we will as a church and so you're seen in this passage he's trying to i'm trying to let you know what's going on right now it's not this is happening in 2000 years it's this is happening right now churches of asia i want to set your present reality in the unseen realities of the present listen the godhead is not panicking right now i don't need to preach this because things are getting wonky out there
29:49
gosh they've been wonky for 2000 years you just lived in a place for a while you couldn't see it like you really think our brothers and sisters in iran and iraq right now are going man it's really getting out of control like i'm trying to help you so myopic of a view you think our brothers and sisters in sub-saharan africa that the stuff i'm reading here is there today are looking at the recent election and all these executive orders and going oh certainly it'll be any day now
30:19
guys i'm trying to help us that is a broken constipated way of seeing the kingdom of god trying to help us like we're going to step out into what christ has for us got to stop thinking like that got to start thinking kingdom of god global universal to the ends of all that you see know and can comprehend he is the king of glory the text said it he is the king of kings the lord over all kings not preaching this because there's panic in the godhead
30:51
you think the spirit's up there going what's the next play man i thought at least we had the u.s sheesh i know it's a mess but i thought we had texas oh my gosh freaks moving in from california what are we going to do you can come but don't bring your politics right like you really think the godhead's wigging out right now on that stuff no so here's here's present reality something's going on something's going on what is it i don't know but there are unseen realities and
31:22
revelation wants to show us what they are i think that's i love apocalyptic literature for that now after the resurrection and ascension of jesus christ we read that there are about 500 followers of jesus christ it's a fascinating read as we look at the ascension of jesus he's resurrected from the grave and then he resurrected in a way that didn't freak out his disciples so do you know what i mean by that like the whole kind of swooned through maybe he wasn't dead
31:53
uh maybe he just kind of didn't die and after three days after they tore the flesh off his body drug himself out of the grave and that and then they were like oh he's alive but but they got so bold after they saw him that i have to believe that he wasn't all mangled in fact the bible tells us that he was he was whole and physically you touch him he was eating fish with his crew for breakfast and and now at his ascension there are 500 people there and and the bible says that as he ascends into the air that they worshipped him but some doubted i just love how honest the scripture is and i'm trying to get
32:23
my mind around how you could doubt i mean you saw him dead now he's resurrected now he's ascending into heaven there's a dude there going i don't know man not sure and again i think things like that are in the bible because they're a real experience and i think things like that are in the bible so we wouldn't have what c.s lewis calls chronological snobbery it starts out as 500 enjoys about 30 years of peace endures about 40 years of some of the
33:00
most intense brutal persecution imaginable and by 351 a.d 350 million romans called jesus lord 51 of the roman empire calls jesus lord if you're like where'd you get those numbers glad you asked rodney stark wrote a book not tony rodney stark wrote a book called the rise of christianity he wrote the book not as a believer but as a sociologist
33:31
and then became a believer as he wrote i love how the lord does that he's like puts it in rodney's brilliant mind to figure out what in the world this thing is and he starts to study and becomes a christian as he studies it so he's saying 51 of the roman empire worships jesus as lord so so here's here's what's going on in me as i study this i'm thinking that group of people under that immense persecution stress lack of organization wild messy grimy frustrating like have
34:02
you ever thought when you're reading the letters of paul about how jacked up those churches are that he's writing to like there's not this clean pretty church it's grimy it's filled with sinners but it's filled with life and freedom and salvation and worship and it's amazing and i keep saying that you don't want a clean perfect church you would screw it up like you being here would ruin it you should actually be encouraged oh man it's a little rough around the edges
34:33
around here that that should actually encourage you you should feel at home then now i want to here's here's my imitate i i think we're ripe for that i think we're ripe to see an outpouring of the spirit of god in such a way that maybe not in our day maybe for our children or maybe for our grandchildren things turn in a way that we can't even imagine right now like listen you think these brothers and sisters that are being burned alive and killed and been driven underground not allowed to to participate in rome's
35:07
economy not being able to hold office you think you think they're going rome will be ours in another hundred years let's be faithful to let our lives be a seed for the generations to come i think they had any idea uh that constantinople is going to be like hey no constantine says hey you know what i don't want to get stabbed to death in the shower too many of these roman citizens are becoming christians i'm gonna say that our official uh religion is christianity do you think they had any clue that that could happen
35:38
guys we've got a picture of it happening we're here in dallas texas worshiping jesus it was born out of this kind of persecution this kind of pain we've got the imagery we need we've got the prophetic words that we need we need only those willing to be obedient and so i'm i'm desperate to call you into it i'm not built to manage an organization i hire guys that think beautifully strategically i'm as someone who's on the front line of ministry
36:10
i just see stuff all the time that just enrages me like how many babies i've had to do the funeral of now how many marriages i've seen just freaking explode leaving just brokenness in its wake you know how many men i see that punt on their god-given call how many busy-body women that are like you you know like all the brokenness we're seeing and so it provokes my spirit because it's the enemy
36:41
just dominating i'm trying to call you out the most terrifying thing imaginable to our enemy is for the sleeper to be awakened for the sleeper to be awakened i love this story in the book of acts um the the seven sons of skiva they're the sons of a jewish exorcist so that was a thing and um they see paul like driving out demons and and people are following jesus and so they want to try it like right like somebody's you're already bent a kind of way if you're like we should find someone who's demon possessed and exercise them
37:12
and and so they find him they find this guy and they try to cast out the demon i've been telling this for 20 years because i love the story and even the the funny parts of the story but they find this guy that's demon possessed and they say to the man in the name of jesus christ paul's god we command you to come out and and the bible says that the demons spoke to them and said i know jesus i've heard of paul who are you and then the man who was demonized turned and the bible says this you can
37:44
look it up in the book of acts beat them bloody and naked and they ran out of the house now if you've ever watched a fight there's like who won i mean yeah i mean he he won the guard but man he got that good right hook in or man he like ddt that just how i judge fights if you came into the fight and you had pants on and when the fight was over you no longer had drawers
38:15
you lost like there's not he did this well or maybe just needs a little bit more creatine in the system no you you're like somebody literally beat your pants off right you just got drove but but here's here's what i want for us in the middle of all of that i would love for the principalities and powers to say i know jesus i've heard of them and i don't want them to ever be able to say of any of us but who are they like i can i'm feeling this in my bones for us and here's what i'm trying to do
38:49
i'm trying to invite you to come with me like i'm just not i and you know this i've been here 20 years i'm not preaching to build a big room i want to make war man i can feel i'm 46 and i'm provoked and i want to invite you maybe you hear this one you're not a christian and a friend brought you or a family member brought you you're just freaked out because of all that's going on around you i want to invite you to join us i want to show you this last sentence from what we read in the bible here's what it says i want to put it on the screen here's what it says about
39:20
this jesus that we're talking about to he to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood i'm not preaching just for church people today in fact if we get too many starched collard church folk i start to get real restless if the answer to how you're doing is i was like fine praise his name then then i get a little weary i think we're probably not in the fight much
39:53
i i think a overly clean church is like an overly clean barn not a lot of life not a lot of work not a lot of fruitful yield so to you i would invite you in i'm not just talking i'm talking to you come he loves you he has paid for your sins with his blood so here like i don't know what you're thinking about yourself right now i don't know how you view yourself i
40:27
don't know how you understand uh god and who he is and what he wants from you but but here it is i'm these aren't my words i'm reading to you the bible to him who loves us and has paid for our sins by his blood you're invited into this you repent of your sins and surrender to jesus and you're right into the middle of this thing
40:59
that i'm talking about today you're right in the midst of the imagery and the victory and the so i'm in revelation because it's showing us ultimate reality that the church of jesus christ is victorious that the schemes of the enemy will be thwarted that when all said and done men and women from every tribe tongue and nation will worship him here's what's crazy about it he has called us filled us with his spirit and empowered us to be sword and shield against the schemes of the
41:31
enemy to make war against the dragon alongside our victorious king and so if you're not a christian just trying to kind of figure these things out but i want to invite you in it's it really is this easy it's not complex it's repenting of our sins and surrendering to jesus christ i just want to invite you to do that today we're going to have a time after the service or you've come with a friend your friend who invited you they love you they want this for you so talk with them or talk with them we'll be here if you want to pray
42:04
with us we love you and then christian here here what does it look like for you to step all the more into obedience to jesus christ again the bible knows nothing of jesus as an add-on he does the bible doesn't know anything is jesus is your ultimate priority you know the bible says jesus is life when he appears who is our life is what the bible says right so i'm not adding jesus onto i'm a pastor and i'm a husband and i'm a dad and i do this and i go here i'm like no no
42:34
christ is life so that no matter where i look what i see is an opportunity to love christ and make him known i see that when i do my budget i see that when i look into the eyes of my wife i'm trying to lead our church out of an overflow of my love for my wife out of the the union i have with lauren when i stare at my kids what i want from is get in the fight like this to win to to be involved in assaulting that what i want for you god i want you to want it for you like i want it for you
43:06
so like what is that next step where have you felt conviction and have delayed obedience because i can tell you listen you know your pastor i'm baptistal and i would love for you to grow in the power of the holy spirit we got no shot of that until you start doing what he already told you don't want to be holy don't want to be righteous don't want to do what he says want to walk in power i hope when i said that you thought i'm an idiot we want these things it's obedience so where is that step of obedience and
43:45
you can think of it in two ways right are there things i'm doing that i know i should not be doing as a christian are there things i should be doing that i'm not doing this can you think about it either way but what i want you to leave here with today if you're a christian is a renewed commitment to i'm going to start with this area of my life i'm going to lay it at your feet and and i'm giving it to you you've asked me to do that i'm stepping into this with all and you watch him meet you there i've said this to you for 20. if you're bored that ain't broken christianity that's probably you not being obedient
44:17
you want jesus to meet you say yes and be obedient goodness sakes if you're not a christian he loves you all of you and if you're in your mind right because i just know the freaking if you're in your mind right now going you don't know me unless i don't have to know you i know my bible why don't we talk about this all the time the bible is filled with people who've blown it far beyond your imagination like rape and murder man after my own heart like you see you you're you're bummed out like saul
44:47
becomes paul and it's another reason why i think you have to understand who the enemy is like if you think the enemy are people that don't like us or people don't hate us you would hate saul and saul would never become paul no no saul becomes paul because the church of jesus christ was filled with love and grace not because they're like this guy's a problem we just pray the imprecatory psalms break his jaw destroy his life kill his family that's not what the early church did they prayed they fasted they worshipped
45:19
they walked in radical obedience this is what revelation will help us with excited next week letters to the churches and then ten more after that let me pray for us father bless these men and women in the name of jesus encourage their hearts build them up in love just pray for my brothers and sisters right now right spiritually i ask right now i just put to the forefront of minds and hearts all over this room and all over the internet as far as the sermon is going
45:54
places where we have refused to be obedient you have made it clear to us in conviction in your word that this is what you have or do not have for us and we have just disregarded that while still continuing to play like we're followers forgive us pull it to the forefront of our mind so that we might lay it before you we might today be serious we might pick it up and get in the fight rather than walking in the foggy cloud of war and father you know those men and women in this room who don't
46:25
know you some of them gosh have been in church their whole life and don't know you and some of them with a friend with a family member tuning in just randomly here just randomly quicken their hearts to your love holy spirit let's pray right now that in in the deeper parts of their soul they would feel something relaxing something opening up just pray in their weariness and fear they might lay all of it at your feet and rejoice in the salvation that you have purchased
46:56
by your blood i pray the gift of repentance the gift of holiness the gift of righteousness over them over us we thank you that you have made us for a moment like this strengthen our spines strengthen our spirits and help us run it's for your beautiful name i pray amen
