the car an essential part of modern life couldn't do without it and the bigger the better because sometimes you just need to carry a lot of stuff so how practical is it do you think to actually try and replace your car with a bike now for some of you perhaps it's a no-brainer cars are expensive and if you live in a city they're slow plus they're just quite a lot of hassle aren't they really for others though it's a non-starter you've got too many kids too much stuff too many long journeys to
00:31
make you feel like you've not got enough time perhaps you don't feel like you're fit enough the list goes on i am going to try though for this week bosch have very kindly lent me not one but two e-bikes both of them cutting-edge with their latest and greatest motors to make it as easy as possible now four million people bought e-bikes in europe alone last year one of them wasn't me so i'm a little bit late to this party so i also get to see just what the fuss is about can they help me
01:02
leave this car to just gather dust this week gather more dust anyway damn bird poo as well going to start with the more familiar looking of the two bikes this is a cannondale adventure there is your motor down there battery is in the down tube here it's a very kind of approachable accessible type of bike very stylish too i think definitely the kind of thing you can just jump on and ride rev it up
01:40
now clearly load carrying capacity on this bike is slightly restricted compared to a car but with a rack on the back i can still get a meaningful amount of shopping home if that's what you need to do so anyway it's still not going to replace your car this one but what it can do is mean you can leave your car at home more often so apparently here in the uk 60 of all journeys taken by car are less than 5 miles which is possible for just about anyone particularly
02:10
if you've got an e-bike that figures consistent across europe it's a little bit higher in the states it does vary very much depending on where you live there but in essence a bike like this does mean that you can begin to leave your car at home and i know that first hand because my wife has been borrowing this she's not a bike rider she would never normally cycle to work but she has been doing and that is cool [Music] now i live in a city called bristol in
02:50
the southwest of england and we have got quite a lot of steep climbs and i think that puts many people off riding bikes it's quite hard getting up here normally let alone if you don't want to arrive at your destination dripping in sweat and that is why principally the whole e-bike thing is kicking off there is a lot of extra assist you get from the motor here it's literally called a pedal assist so the pat the bike only gives you power when you're turning the pedals the more
03:22
power you put in the more power the bike gives you back feels very natural you've also got four modes that you can scroll through that tailor exactly how much boost you get the more power you ask for the faster you will go through your battery but i found from riding around town that you could get a lot of hours out of a single charge [Applause] i've been more out of breath out there if i was walking
03:53
[Applause] wow that was a delightful little interlude completely unrepresentative of my own life but nice all the same now because you see if i i'm truly going to mothball my car i am going to need something with a bit of load carrying capacity something like this a cargo cargo bike this is an unbelievable piece of engineering it's like the bmw of cargo bikes bikes of this silk have truly been designed to try and make cars obsolete i mean the
04:25
trunk up here is bigger than the boot in a small car it's 200 liters of space and that's just up to the shoulder line here there's nothing stopping you stacking it higher right let's go and make chores fun ha ha i don't need to wear that anymore do i join [Music] watch out bristol here i come [Music] now haven't we lent a cargo bike i've got to say i have an almost uncontrollable urge to fill it
05:01
with as much stuff as possible so to start with we are going to do a chore that i've been putting off for ages she's going to the garden center principally because buying compost doesn't really seem like a very fun way to spend the saturday afternoon but now for a start it's not saturday which is i feel makes me feel like i'm winning slightly but also i'm riding my bike to the garden center so uh
05:27
oh there we go that's great here we go [Music] check it out now when i was planning my day today i was thinking initially that i'd be a bit nervous about locking up this bike at my destination normally when i ride around town i do so on a bike that i don't really care that much if it gets left outside places whereas this as i said is a really lovely bit of kit but as
06:09
well as carrying a trusty mechanical lock with you fortunately the latest generation of e-bikes have also got additional security measures built in so bikes with bosch motors also have bosch head units now they do a whole load of stuff you've got connectivity functions where you pair up with your smartphone of course pairs up with the bike and it does things like range calculation as well as all the basics like speed and distance and so forth you can also work it as a sat nav when it's paired up to your phone but one of the neatest functions
06:40
is the lock function okay so having removed this head unit from the bike the motor here is disabled the only way to enable it again is to replace the exact same head unit with it so any would-be thief will not have my hedge in it because it's going to be in my pocket and so they're going to have to pedal this bike under their own steam it's effectively going to be worthless because they also aren't going to be able to sell it on so fingers crossed we're all good
07:20
ah right i told you it was a chore three bags of composts that's gonna be like 48 nearly 50 kilos actually and whilst i resisted the temptation to buy a tree i did buy some goji berry bush which um well today really could be interesting i'll put that in last there you go i'm happy with that having just put 50 something kilos plus a goji berry bush
07:59
in this bike now it seems like a very good time to talk about the motor clearly a very important part of a cargo bike so behind there you have a bosch hargo line motor now that has been tuned specifically to work with a cargo bike it has the capacity to increase the rider's power of the pedals by 400 which sounds quite scary actually but bear in mind it's not it's a pedal assist bike so because the motor is also sampling your power output a thousand times a second as soon as you back off the motor backs
08:30
off as well so it feels very natural it's not like twisting a throttle now to help get large loads like this one moving bosch will increase the torque of this motor so it's up to 85 newton meters so you shouldn't have a problem getting going from the traffic lights even when going up a steep hill now as i mentioned when riding that cannondale the more power you use the quicker you drain the battery and on this you're of course probably requiring even more power from the motor so cargo have fitted not one but two enormous
09:01
625 watt hour batteries in it so to put it in context i've been riding around a good uk today spent quite a lot of time in turbo mode as you would and i still got 95 battery left on the range calculator it's saying i've got about 120 miles that i can do on a full charge which um that would be a productive day of chores if you rode around a city did 120 miles and picked up goji berry bushes i can't tell you how cool it is to not
09:35
be stuck in my car right now but yet be carrying a cargo that would have meant a hundred percent that i would have had to have been in my car this is just wicked now of course there are many other reasons for trying to reduce car use other than having a big grin on your face there's the big ones like climate change there's the local ones like reducing congestion and toxic air pollution and then there's the personal ones as well like whilst i'm not working up a sweat right now i'm also
10:05
not completely motionless sat on my backside i mean i am sat on my backside but you know what i mean my heart rate is currently uh about 105 beats a minute so that counts as exercise which is something that we could all do with more of because remember heart disease is the biggest killer of humans worldwide and in most of those cases that heart disease to be mitigated by changing lifestyle factors it an exercise is one of the big ones absolutely then there's also economic factors as
10:38
well now this as i said is a a premium piece of equipment with all the extras it comes in at about 8 000 euros which to be fair next to a car is still pretty cheap but it's actually the running costs where you start saving hand over fist when you try and think about what a car might cost you to run for a year there's what 500 pounds a year on servicing tax and insurance is going to cost you anywhere from 500 to 1000 out of thought and then there's fuel i mean there's a minimum i'd have thought you'd be
11:09
putting a thousand pounds a year in and then when you compare it to this where i'd say that the servicing costs are about half there's no tax insurance is optional but if you do decide to get some it's going to be significantly cheaper than car insurance and then apparently it costs about 30 euros a year to do about 15 000 kilometers on an e-cargo bike which well strikes me as being pretty good value and so clearly
11:39
right now i am saving money which means i'm going to treat myself time for another stop [Music] this is totally bonkers right i've never ridden a bike like it it's got automatic gears and just like driving an automatic car you can't really feel when it changes so it's just totally seamless you just pedal and you just kind of go from anywhere from like two kilometers an hour to like 30 kilometers an hour amazing right shall we
12:12
[Music] how good is this right definitely got my compost to be a ratio wrong in this but uh still having just spoken about heart disease and um you know alcohol but still this is about moderation not total abstinence even potentially about car use but we'll come on to that later right anyway i've got to get home i'm gonna drop off my goji berry bush my compost and also my beers now
12:49
and pick up my kids brace yourselves all right brace yourselves do you like sitting in a bucket on the front of my bike so this is albert this is cecily albee is nearly seven so he's really nearly five and we're going to jump in the bye and go for a bit of spoon aren't we should we go to the park yeah yeah okay right for any concerned parents out there there is a lot of safety built into this so i can have a look so we got seats in here these have been in here all day they just had covers on
13:32
they've got five point harnesses on there adjustable headrests so that you can get it at the right height for their size also this box has got structural metal all around it to act as a kind of impact protection and the box itself is made from structural foam to absorb any impacts should you end up in a collision right you want to jump in [Music] what does it feel like compared to a car
14:06
it's what a train it feels like a tree [Music] right can you see the hill of doom yeah okay you reckon we can do it yeah you reckon we can do it okay guys turbo come on i don't ride up much here faster on when i'm on my uh posh road bike high fives
14:39
we cannot crack you but we can do marshmallows [Music] great running ah well done how are your burps well done cecily you're still going so gone what did you think what what if i told you that we'd sold the car and that was how we were going to get around now what would you think oh good massively good yeah why is that yeah
15:21
it's better for the world and it's really fun it was fun okay that's cool i said it yeah goodbye wow oh that's good i'm glad you enjoyed it [Music] well that has been a lot of fun a lot of fun indeed and a very useful day as well caught up on some chores so thank you very much for that now i suppose you've got to answer the question could i replace my car
15:54
with an e-bike i mean of course the answer is yes i could i would have to make some lifestyle changes that's for sure but it could definitely be possible but i think it's also worth saying that it doesn't have to be black and white it's not like e-bike versus car you don't have to sell your car in order to buy one of these you could perhaps be in a position to sell your second car and buy an e-bike or indeed you could just buy an e-bike and use your car a whole load less you wouldn't necessarily get all the economic benefits from that you'd still
16:25
have to tax and insure your car and you would still have to service it you'd just save a whole load of fuel costs enough to offset the price of your e-bike eventually but you would then also get the physical benefits and your local environment would feel the benefits as well one less car on the roads one less car in traffic one less exhaust belching out fumes so there is still an absolute reason as well as the fact that it just puts a smile on your face i think
16:56
and that's priceless sorry i didn't mean to end on such a cheesy line but there you go please give this video a big thumbs up if you enjoyed it
