How to Download YouTube Subtitles as Text
Hello and thank you for joining me for this tutorial. My name is David from freelancerinsights.com.
In this video I will show you how to download subtitles as text from YouTube
If you're pondering why you need to download texts or subtitles from YouTube, it's probably because maybe you have a video on YouTube that is captioned and all you need is a transcript for your own purposes, maybe to write a blog post or something of the sort. Number two, maybe you're a freelancer and you just landed a contract or a job only to realize the video already has captions. There is an advantage for doing this is that it makes work easier. The few disadvantages that are available is that the text is not punctuated when you download it from YouTube and number two, if the video was auto-captioned by YouTube you need to ensure that you do proofread the captions to ensure that they come out as they're supposed to come out. That is, the grammar is correct, the punctuation, and everything. I would love to speed up my transcription process. I don't know if you would but join me as I show you how to download subtitles as text from YouTube. For this video I will be using Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Please note that depending on the version of Chrome or Firefox that you're using, the interface may be different. For this process to work
all you need to do is just paste in a code inside the web console of either Firefox or Mozilla and you will auto-generate the captions as text
Just look at what I do for the following videos. I will begin with Google Chrome. Please note that you don't have to write the text as you see it. I will provide it in the description below. I have my video open here on YouTube and as you can see it has a symbol of CC meaning that it is already captioned and if I play it you can see the text appear here. All I need to do is just come up to the right where you go to the Menu, click on that, and then click on More Tools and then just go to the Developer Tools. From the Developer Tools it is possible to navigate to where the console is. If you're not seeing yours just click on this, maybe it's somewhere here.
Just click on Console and now all you need to do is just paste this text, and I will provide it below
Just copy it and then just paste it in here. Just click on that and just Ctlr + V. Once you do that just hit Enter and automatically the transcript for the whole video is unleashed. The next process is either just right clicking and saying Save As. All you need to do is just change the extension of this video, let's say maybe David.HTML. Once you download that you can just click on it and it will automatically open up as text and just copy this text and paste it in your preferred text editing software, maybe if it's Word or Notepad, just paste it in there and do your edits. Or you can just import it into Express Scribe or whichever transcriptions software that you're using. That is the process on Google Chrome. On Firefox, the process is almost just similar and all you need to do is just copy that code again and also on the right just click on the Menu bar and then on the Developer. Once the Developer tab opens, just click on the web console and it will populate down here. Just click on this inside here and hit Ctlr + V and then Enter. Automatically the script just pops up on screen. It's that easy to actually do this whole process and for you to just go back and just start doing your thing proofreading, punctuating, and checking on the grammar and everything. Just copy it and paste it wherever you want. If it's Notepad or Word or Express Scribe, just do that. It's that simple. This process will help you increase your speed of transcription by just giving you the option to proofread and ensure that everything is correct. Your clients may end up giving you more work depending on how fast you do the job and this process has worked for me many times. The only problem is that, as I mentioned, you need to proofread, punctuate and it's just that easy.
