How to Edit Subtitles into Plain Text or Transcripts [METHOD 1]
I hope you've been well. It's been a while since I did a video and this video I'm doing it because I've realized people are having a hard time editing YouTube subtitles that have been downloaded from YouTube. What Julie requested is she got all this code that was mixed up and jumbled with some of the HTML code and she wanted to know how to clean up the text. Therefore, in this video I will do a download of the subtitles and show you when it has all the HTML code and how to remove it using a software. This is, probably I'd call it Method 1 because you can use it with this kind of file or any other subtitle file that you find. What I'll do here is that I'll go to this particular video and it's this video: How to Download Subtitles as Text from YouTube. I'll just open it up and for this one, this is the video where you just paste in a code into the console. So, this is the video. Okay, let's wait for this to play. But basically what we'll have to do is we'll have to get this code. Let's skip the Ad and just pause the video. So I'll just click on CC to activate the English auto-generated captions and then click on the top right here to customize and control Google Chrome and then what I'll do is just go to More Tools and then go to Developer Tools. Once I click on Developer Tools I'll ensure that I've selected the console and this code, the whole of this code. Just copy it and this code is usually in this video somewhere here. You can just click here and you'll get the code. What I'll need to do is just I'll paste this code here and just hit Enter. The minute I hit Enter I'll get all these errors on this side but I'll get the file on this side, an XML file here.
All you need to do is just click on this and just say Save As and save at a location where you'll be able to retrieve it
Let's just say I'll call this new folder Test for YouTube - Saving as Plain Text. I'll call it, say, Editing the Subtitle File. So I'll save this as All Files.HTML and just click on Save.
Once I click on Save the file will be saved
For the next process, because if we click on the file, we just click on it, it's going to open as a HTML file but it's some form of text file. But with all these fonts, CC, and all that, this is what people are having a hard time working with. As you see Juliane here just asked this question and she just wants to get rid of all this content. What we'll do is I'll use a software called Subtitle Edit. Subtitle Edit is probably one of the best softwares to edit subtitles with. It's a free software and if you have no other option or you don't have anything to subtitle your video with, kindly just use this. So if I look at the file that we got, this is what we get. Probably, well, you can't read this. This is just a lot of jumbled information here so what I'll need to do is just click on Subtitle Edit. I've already installed it on my computer and all I need to do is just click on File, Open, and then I'll navigate to where the file is and just click on it. The good thing with Subtitle Edit, it opens HTML file, XML, if you can check out all the formats it supports here you'll just be amazed. Over 250 caption formats. So I'll just click on open and you'll see all this mumbo-jumbo or whatever you may want to call it, and you can see it here. What we'll need to do, I'll just go to the file and say Export Plain Text. As you can see, if you look at what we have here and what we have here, we have a cleaner plain text file just a little & and £ sign here once in a while, but these come around when you auto-transcribe videos on YouTube and you have an apostrophe. Like here you say "you don't". You see, instead of an apostrophe YouTube for some strange reason replaces all these with some funny numbering. And we've also seen this here, "they're", you see the apostrophe. You are, "you're" and here again you see it. But now, all you need to do is you can say Show Numbers if you want show numbers, Show Time Codes, you can now actually render this out as a file that is readable. But we want it as just a plain text so all you need to do is just come in, open your file on Subtitle Edit and just come to File, Export Plain Text. Once you confirm that this is what you want and ensure everything is as clear as you want it to be, just click on Save As, Edit subtitle file.txt.
If you go to where your file is, my file is somewhere in Freelance Insights folder, Test for YouTube saving as plain text, and just double click on this. It will open on Notepad and as you can see it's a plain text file and all your worries are complete. I think now if you're using this process to download subtitles from YouTube, therefore you can just use Subtitle Edit to edit out all the codes that are giving you a hard time. This is probably one of the best methods but I always recommend... I've done a couple of other videos on how to download YouTube subtitles and I'd recommend that you just check them out as well because I believe they're easier than what we have here. For example, with this video: How to Download YouTube Subtitles as Transcripts. This is a very very easy method because all you need to do is you just need to come and download some funny file here. Just click on More and just click on Transcript. That is what you actually just need to do and the transcript automatically populates, and the subtitle just populates.
All you have to do is just click on Copy, just hold down your left mouse key, just copy it, and if you want to edit out in, let's say, Subtitle Edit just click on New, just paste it here and just come here
File, you can just save but as it is you can just click on Export Plain Text when it's just there. Plain text, boom! Yaani... Sorry for that; I just put in some Swahili there. But this all you need to do. It's that simple to save as plain text. And you can just do this with a simple free software called Subtitle Edit.
As always I appreciate your comments
I do my best to answer all comments where possible and Juliane I believe this will help you and probably will help other people know how to edit these files and at least have less stress time and focus on getting the transcripts on your end.
